I just finished watching A Man Escaped, and WOW, what an amazing film! My stomach was in knots.

I'd had a little hesitancy about Bresson. I liked Les Dames Du Bois De Boulougne when I saw it, but I know that to be a bit atypical of his other films.
Though I own Diary Of A Country Priest, I haven't seen it yet, but I did see Au Hazard Balthazar which was my entire reason for hesitancy. I probably just wasn't in the right mood when I saw it, but while incredibly beautiful, it felt soooo slow. Not this time. I can't recommend A Man Escaped enough!

Now I need to see Pickpocket.

Based off of all the enthusiasm about Pickpocket and Pickup On South Street, I'm hoping Criterion decides to upgrade those two.

South Street is great, but then again, I'm a huge Sam Fuller fan.

That way, in my mind, it would be like paying for the price of admission to see the movies in a theater. (You don't get that admission price back either ... whether you liked the movie or not).
Im pretty sure members would do 2 criterions for an OOP seems like a fair trade at least then you would have been able to experience the blu ray. It be nice if Netflix carry some criterion discs

Well, at least I know I'll have one of the most recent OOP titles. I have never seen any of these films, but after reading a little about them I can say that it seems like I will love them all. If I have to pay upwards of $50 for the rest, then so be it. Wouldn't be the first time. (I'm looking at you, Play Time and The Man Who Fell to Earth)

Deepdiscount seems to have all of them (Usually ships in 5-10 days) ..not sure if anyone has ordered from them

I enjoy his films, too!

I still have White Dog to watch and China Gate to purchase.

I am yet to be a "Criterion" and if you read this post i thank you because of it's relevance. I almost posted this in that other thread about Criterion, but I thought you all would appreciate it more.

I am 47 and I realized a few years back when I visited my mother, I noticed she had these Criterion DVDs. Now she is no way a HT aficionado, yet it never registered in my mind. She was born 1933 and she is a movie nut regardless of her "gear".

I went on to explain to my 80 year old mom about this site and thread. I tried to explain that I am burnt out on the third third of 20th century film. As I mentioned Criterion, she got so excited and started rattling off titles that are ones I've wanted to see, Red Shoes, Third Man etc.

This phone conversation gave birth to a new relationship with my mother. Our love for film is genetic and she will guide me on my future Criterion buys.

Thanks for reading.

Peace

My monthly upgrade wishlist:

Le Samourai (has to be soon...has to be...)
The Cranes are Flying
Ballad of a Soldier
The Naked Prey
Andrei Rublev
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
Ace in the Hole

.....and about a dozen others.

One of these months I'll be that blind squirrel who finds his acorn. Le Samourai feels darn close, but I am still sniffing around for the rest of my list, just like on every announcement day for the past two years.

As for new releases, I have a feeling we will get something that has been out there pending for awhile, like Red River or Thief.

Well since we know Devils Backbone is coming up..my other July hopes are
Onibaba, Foreign Correspondent, She , and Equinox
We need our horror sci fi genre titles !
(I said She because they are releasing Things to Come, so why not release the co-feature from the inferior legend films blu ray)

Great story. Thanks for sharing. I am the only movie nut in my entire family. And the only one who has even heard of or cares about Criterion.

Everyone's talking about what they won't to see announced in a few days, but I'm kind of dreading it.
I loaded up my B&N cart in preparation for the next sale and HOLY SH#T! I've got so much already in there! It's a little bit frightening
I couldn't wait and decided to lessen that load a little, so I've pre-order Pierre Etaix from Amazon (along with a couple of the new Hitchcocks).

Completely off-topic and non-Criterion-related:
Last night I watched The Thief of Bagdad. Loved it! A total blast and pretty funny as well
No exaggeration: I think it has the biggest movie sets I've ever seen. Amazing. Kind of awesome to know so much of it would've been built compared to films today where less and less physical sets are used.
Oh, speaking of silent films (and to get back on topic): I watched The Phantom Carriage with the KTL score. I'm not sure I have a preference for either of the scores, because I really love them both. A very difference mood and experience to the Matti Bye score.
And speaking of multiple scores (but Criterion DVD, not blu-ray), I watched Underworld, from the Josef von Sternberg box-set, with the second score. Also really great.
Anyone interested in silent cinema that hasn't seen these films should consider having a look.

Unless of course Criterion gives Devil's Backbone spine number 665 just to make everyone angry.

I don't know if Limite is confirmed of not.

So as of right now my July candidates are:

-Devil's Backbone (highly likely)
-Lord of The Flies (Confirmed release without time table)
-The Life Aquatic (It was hinted at being a good candidate for a "summer" release, Royal Tenunbaums was released last August.)
-Jules et Jim (For some reason I think this is coming sooner rather than later)

Three new spines in 1 month is very exciting.

Devil's Backbone will be great, but Lord of the Flies, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Spring Breakers, and Kids being announced!
If these were true I would just piss myself right here.

If Tess isn't a part of the next announcement, I'm just going to import the UK disc.

For some reason I really doubt IFC is going to give Spring Breakers to Criterion, it's way too high profile. Annapurna has the distribution rights, I don't think they have a home video label (could be wrong).
