I saw a lot of mixed-to-negative comments on here as well, so I'd lowered my expectations...but I ended up really liking it despite the few complaints I mentioned. I like his ability to create the incredibly intimate moments he's now recognizable for, and this may have had the most of them I've seen so far.

It's very relevant and tackles that issue of the nature of violence perfectly, no doubt about it. I just meant the subject isn't one I would normally want to watch, the great filmmaking kept me interested throughout.

I honestly preferred Saving Private Ryan initially but have grown to enjoy Thin Red Line better. It seems SPR is more of a Hollywood style film that everyone gets and likes whereas Thin Red Line isn't for everyone. Still the cinematography from TRL is amazing and after a few views you grasp how Malik was showing the impact of war on not only humans but nature as well.

I haven't seen it yet (waiting for it to open on the big screen), but this write-up got me excited. I've heard from people that have seen it that it puts the film in a better perspective.

Might I add, the film has some of the most potent flashbacks I've ever seen:

I just got my copy of Leon Morin, Priest from Amazon, and it did not have a blu-ray sticker on it(though it still says blu-ray edition on the back), and there was a whole in the wrap. It almost looked repackaged. Did anyone else who ordered from Amazon have a similar problem?

God yes. It seems that he went on to focus on an angelic woman to a greater effect in The Tree of Life. I don't think any other actress has inhabited Malick's quintessential woman better than Jessica Chastain.

Certainly more than Rachel McAdams (Ive yet to see the film though). I think the casting is holding people back from embracing the film. Dana Stevens said something to the effect that she couldn't forget for a second that she was watching Ben Affleck the actor. I wonder if ill have the same problem.

As spotted over at criterionforum, spine #664 is Mizoguchi's The Life of Oharu (look at the URL if you click Spine 664 at the bottom of this page).

I didn't really have that problem with him, myself... but I thought I would. Big reason might be (not really but maybe a spoiler)
[Show spoiler] because it's almost as if he says nothing in the film at all. He's certainly essential, but only exists as the 'man' in my eyes, for much of the film.
As for McAdams, I agree with the previous comment that she's disposable.
[Show spoiler]She indeed only feels like a distraction in this film (to me at least) from anything necessary happening.
