That was quick

My favorite cover is Hunger, but this one is in the top 5 for sure.

Like you talk about, the historical setting is unique, and the sublimation of passion in the discussions makes you breathe deeply just for some relief. And the film has incredible humanism; I'm struck that Melville had little to no religious faith but could so clearly see -- and show -- how faith works in the life of someone who believes. I think this film is a huge achievement, and you expressed that very well.
Admittedly knowing little about Melville's films, this is the one I'm looking forward to seeing the most. Army of Shadows has me intrigued after reading the high recommendations in here. I'm not sure about Le Cercle Rouge ... but in fairness, I haven't really spent the time to thoroughly check it out either.

I'm hot and cold on Last Year At Marienbad. No offense to anybody, but when I look at the trailer, it looks boring as heck to me. But then I started watching the entire film on youtube and the next thing you know the first third of the movie seemed to fly by, before I had to turn it off when I had to leave the house.

There's been several if we're going by blu-ray only:

Since Sony has given up on Catalog titles on Blu ray I'd say the Columbia Capra films will end up with either Criterion or Twilight Time. Unless Warner enters an agreement with them too.

I am new to this thread and forum but I am kinda new to criterion collection. Any pointers you would have? I have 29 spines right now all of which are blu-ray.

Also jealous at everyone who was able to pick up Repo Man today. I gotta wait til next week.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance would be fantastic. John Ford, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and a who's who of character/supporting actors.

There hasn't exactly been a flood of Paramount titles finding their way to Criterion but Rosemary's Baby leave at least a little room for hope.
Speaking of Capra, Criterion should pursue a release of his 1937 big budget foray into fantasy Lost Horizon. The DVD copy that I own was the result of a film preservationist named Robert Gitt who worked over a period of 25 years finding lost footage the world over to restore it to its original 132 min. running time. 24 min. were cut during WWII to tone down its pacifist message. The Columbia release is admirable but the results could be stunning given the Criterion treatment.

Paramount's distribution deal with WB doesn't bode well for future Criterion releases.

I am keen for any and all Capra films to be given the Criterion treatment.

Arsenic and Old Lace is my favourite too.

I need to create a music video for Lady Gaga's "I like it Rough" set to scenes from In the Realm of the Senses.

I just watched Tokyo Drifter. It was a lot different than what I expected.

It was a rather simple plot, but it was a fun little, short movie. I really liked the directing and the vibrant colors in the film. If the average person didn't know better, they would have thought it was filmed a lot later than the 1960s.

A lot of the directing seemed to mirror some of the directing from Tarantino's Kill Bill films, minus all of the silhouette fighting.

Hi, has anyone seen the Devil's Backbone and can comment on its quality? I am a huge fan of Pan's Labyrinth, so is the movie similar to that? Also, I am not a particularly big fan of horror movies. Scenes where you can tell what is coming are fine (like the Pale Man scene) but scenes where stuff jumps out at you suddenly cause me to have a heart attack haha. I know this is pretty specific but does anyone know if this movie is heavy on that? Sorry if this movie has been discussed earlier, I looked through the last couple pages but this thread moves fast! Thanks

It's one of Del Toro's best. It's a bit slow and reserved. It has a similar setting to Pan's Labyrinth. In fact, some think of Cronos, DB and PL as a trilogy of sorts. They are all among Del Toro's best imho.

Back in middle school I almost always listened to my Black Flag cassette tapes while mowing the lawn, so this song has such a strong nostalgic pull on me. Even now, years later, whenever I mow the lawn, I find myself singing Black Flag songs.

I might have to give in and get Repo Man before the next sale, although I was trying to budget myself...

I HATE it when those '60s Japanese New Wave directors rip off Tarantino!

Leone seemed to borrow a lot from Tarantino, too.

Best colors ever! Great movie.

Tarantino probably did draw influence from Tokyo Drifter.

Great collection so far!

If you can make your way to a Barnes and Noble to find the recently out-of-print Melville Blu-rays (Leon Morin, Priest , Army of Shadows, and Le Cercle Rouge) before they're gone, then I guarantee that you'll be happy with those films.

I actually got beat out on Army of Shadows at the Barnes and Noble by me. They didn't have the other two but I missed a message from a friend that those were going OOP and didn't get them before they went OOP.

I am still debating how to handle Criterion buying for the next few months as I save up for the July sale though. I can't get enough of the Criterion Collection though. It is helping me expand my cinematic horizons and I expanding my collection at the same time.

THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE is a great film that is actually very easily comparable to PAN'S LABYRINTH. It is a mixed bag of coming of age drama, ghost story, set at the end of war. This movie gets creepy as hell but like most Del Toro films, man is the one to be feared. This movie goes places that are not conventional and I am all the more grateful for it. I saw this film before I watched PL and I was able to meet Del Toro in person and I believe this film will reassure you that his films can be truly magnificent and cross a multitude of genres. You will not regret this blind buy.
