I'm getting rid of my copy, too. I hated the movie lol. It was so overrated, in my opinion. I don't see the hype surrounding it - maybe because it's not a happy happy love story and just a happy one or perhaps because it appealed more to guys? I thought it was very cliché overall. I hate Zooey Deschanel.
That's right, it's incredibly cliche. I remember watching it a couple years ago with people my age, and they all loved it... it was kind of sad, because they were completely unaware of how actually unoriginal it is, and found it very creative.

That's a bingo. How my brother has seen this film over 60 times, I will never know...

You should slap him. Watching it once was painful enough...

I need to see Force of Evil.

I watched Body and Soul in a class a few months ago, and the commentary on wealth and remaining true to one's identity remains incredibly relevant. Some great cinematography in that one, too.

French Masterworks: Russian Emigres in Paris DVD

I wanted to bring to your attention this fabulous upcoming release from Flicker Alley. Unfortunately, I cannot post a full review on the site because we do not have a DVD section for reviews, but I have posted some information for you here (see the link below). Terrific release, well worth adding to your collections

I think he has kicked it. He's getting married in a couple months anyways. Maybe I should show him Monsoon Wedding in the hope that it will become his next favorite.

Pro-B, that set looks terrific! Putting it in my Wishlist. The Late Mathias Pascal looks especially intriguing: a 3 hour silent epic

Abd, The Late Mathias Pascal is also out on Blu-ray, but we did not get a screener for it. I will buy it soon on my own and will post a review.

The rest of the films in the set are indeed very good. And the box set is as classy as everything else Flicker Alley have released

By the looks of it I would rank the Blu Rays that are OOP the following way from priciest to least expensive....

The Third Man
The Man Who Fell To Earth
Playtime
Pierre Le Fou
Chungking Express
Army of Shadows
Le Cercle Rouge
Last Year At Marienbad
Leon Morin, Priest

I really liked it as well, it was creative and enjoyable. The manic pixie dream girl angle was not bothersome (Zoey had not pigeon holed herself yet at the time) but ending it one scene earlier would have been great.

In that same vein is Like Crazy, it's sort of an anti-500 Days.

Sorry if this has already been posted but Leon Morin, Priest is available for 50% off at Amazon at least today. For the color films by Melville I'll wait for Studio Canal / Lionsgate releases because I like the cooler tones of their transfer, but I snagged this one for now

I've got the separate Blu-ray of THE LATE MATHIAS PASCAL, and "intriguing" is exactly the word for it. It takes a while to get going, but is a darkly comic gem overall, and falls nicely into two parts so you don't really need to sit through three hours straight. Picture quality is excellent and the music score is very good. The only extra is a booklet, but at least that's something and is all that several Criterion releases have.

I really wish the Russian Emigres in Paris set were also on Blu-ray, but I'll probably get the DVD anyway. Flicker Alley usually has quite good quality on most of their DVDs. I've wanted to see KEAN for years, and the others all sound like something I'll want to see.

Indeed. It truly is a terrible film laden with cringe-inducing moments (JGL's dance, "I was reading Dorian Gray", etc).

It's enough for a film to be bad but to be bad AND self-consciously quirky...

(I was going to say Lionsgate's release of "The Conversation", but that doesn't have a cool parade chase at the end.)
Okay. I'll check them out. Thanks.

Yeah, I'd say I liked it overall. It was pretty inoffensive when it didn't work and pretty effective when it did. For instance, the split screen wasn't exactly groundbreaking but it was very well executed.

And I don't know that they needed to end it earlier
[Show spoiler]but the name thing was waaaaaaaaaaaay too cute. Other than that, that last scene had an interesting rorschach quality to it. Depending on my mood it either seemed optimistic to the point of being syrupy or it seemed like the dumbest rat in the lab was about to nuzzle the electric shock lever again
.
