Default Wings of Desire

Has anyone compared the UK release of Wings of Desire to the Criterion one? The review here says the UK one has image quality which is a bit inferior to the Criterion one. Can anyone confirm this?

The fact that Criterion BDs are all region-locked is presenting me with a conundrum (having an expensive Region B BD player which cannot easily be made region-free...).

The list price of Yojimbo/Sanjuro is $59.99 however on the website it is $49.99, I kindly informed the cashier the price online, he looked up and they matched the online price no questions asked.

Further, Days of Heaven is listed at Best Buy (both online and at the store) for $34.99. I want the blu but not at that price so I started looking up brick and mortar stores to see if I could find a price match to present to Best Buy. As a shot in the dark I went to Target's website and to my delight they have Yojimbo/Sanjuro listed for $48.96 and Days of Heaven listed for $27.96.

For those who live in states where Amazon charges sales tax and can find these disks early at the local Best Buy can use Target's prices to price match at Best Buy and obtain the disks for a great price. Going at lunch to pick up Days of Heaven!

My local Best Buys used to do price matches based on Target's site etc but stopped to the point of they now make it a point to see if they stock the release in stores, if not stocked they won't match the prices.

I used to be able to match Walmart Target etc and they just would look it up on the site and then just push the price change thru, but they got really tight on their restictions and it went thru about 8 stores in my area. They must have gotten a memo or something.

I did get the difference back from teh BB.com price on the Yoj/San set. but I fig. I was getting Bigger than Life and Days of Heaven early so I felt it was worth it. (picked mine up Monday eve)

I would think that pro-b could confirm it since he reviewed both the UK disc and the Criterion disc. So, the observation of both discs is coming from the same guy. And I tend to trust pro-b's technical observations when it comes to his reviews.

I think you should get yourself:
-The Seventh Seal
- Wings of Desire
- Wages of Fear
- Paris, Texas
- Lola Montès
- The 400 Blows

Remarkable films presented in their best available quality.

OK, so Criterion's page is a little vague on the upcoming Brakhage set.

Vol. 1 is listed only as a DVD
Vol. 2 is listed only as a DVD

The box set is listed only as a Blu-ray.

Will the box set be available for DVD?

Will the individual volumes be available on Blu-ray separately (probably not)

Will the Blu-ray contain two separate cases, or just be a single case?

If you didn't price match their .com price for the YOJ/SAN set take your receipt back in to get it for 49.99 Mine rung up 59.99 but I took my receipt in and they gave me the difference.

As of right now, according to Criterion's website, the DVDs look to be only available separately.

Again, just as you've already seen on Criterion's site, they're only showing us that the blu-ray volumes are available as a set and not individually. Otherwise, I think each would be listed separately like the Monterey Pop films and "Yojimbo" and "Sanjuro."

I don't think anyone on here knows this answer, yet. Probably won't find out until pro-b gets his review copies in. Maybe, then he'll let us know.

If you're familiar with Godard and Fellini then Pierrot and 8 1/2 are no-brainers---get them!

However, if you haven't seen a film by them before then you may not be able to appreciate those films. Pierrot is a great film but not the best entry point for Godard. Pierrot was filmed with no script and its structure is very loose and spontaneous.

8 1/2 is Fellini's best but may leave someone not familiar with his work with their head spinning. It's a constant barrage of metaphors, fantasy, crazy women and Nino Rota's legendary score. I'd recommend Nights of Cabiria as a film to watch if one hasn't seen a Fellini yet.

Of course you could disregard this and just watch those films multiple times!

That's a bit subjective, isn't it? Not everyone considers "8 1/2" to be Fellini's best, do they? I sure don't. Did Fellini consider "8 1/2" to be his best film?

Those are on the short list of the one's i can't decide on, along with Hunger and Revanche. I just have to decide which two of them i should start with along with 8½.

I finally broke down to the OCD of this thread and ordered replacement cases. They came lightning quick, as compared to what I have read in this thread. Ordered them on monday, got them USPS today. More good CC news, my Days of Heaven, Pierrot Le Fou and Yojimbo/Sanjuro box set just shipped UPS today. I am so happy with CC, I ordered one of the shirts. For a goof, I put in the AFS code, and it honored it too. All around, a good day for CC in my eyes.

I just don't understand the intermittent bursts of good/quick customer service regarding the replacement cases. I guess it probably has to do with what they have in stock, but I don't think it's right when they ignore multiple emails regarding your order status. There should be a proper ordering process in place (i.e. through their website) that would give you more information, such as if the case you need is available or on backorder, estimated delivery times, tracking info, etc. One way or another, they do arrive... so I guess there's that. It's just crazy to see you got all of them in less than 5 business days, and some people have waited months (I read about someone recently that has been waiting since November).

Anyway, I bought one of the CC shirts too, I think they're pretty cool! I got the Gray T-shirt with silver "C" -- it's very nice.

I sure hope not as I've just spent over $50 to import the French Carlotta BD of Il Casanova di Fellini and it sure wasn't for the extras (awesome packaging aside), which are in French and without English subs. In fact, the only way I can watch it is in the English "dub" (with Donald Sutherland voicing his lines). Whereas 8 1/2 will cost me only $18 at the next B&N sale...

Speaking of which...come on Barnes and Noble! My last CC Blu-ray fix (sans Revanche) was way back in early November. I need a 50% off sale!

Does everyone have to preface every post they make with "my own personal opinion is...." for your sake, or can you do everyone a favor and just envision it there yourself?

Anyway, I'm watching Bigger Than Life now. UNBELIEVABLE restoration by Criterion.

Every post on here is opinions so I don't see the problem with ccfixx's post. I actually agree with his post. I don't think since a movie is popular it has to be the director's best. That is just a bandwagon type thing to do or someone who has seen very few movies to say. We see Seven Samurai posts, Seventh Seal, 8 1/2, blah blah blah blah blah posts saying "they are the best movies ever". Are those not opinions? It just seems to me those people need to watch more and not follow the film school kids' favs.
