It's from a Buster Keaton silent film Sherlock Jr. He has the photo in his Avatar. To an extent it doesn't have much relations to Sherlock Holmes

The people I legitimately feel for are the Y Tu Mama Tambien fans, how many years ago was that hinted at and still nothing? Every month much be a punch in the gut.

It's almost not better not knowing when/if a title is coming so the wait isn't so arduous.

TBONTB is a very hilarious film that modern audiences will appreciate. I highly recommend you give it a view.

Here's why it's an unbeatable lineup:
•one of the greatest films by Max Ophuls (whom Kubrick was inspired by)
•John Frankenheimer's finest film and a damn twisty one at that
•To be or not to be: Lubitsch's finest film: irreverent and highly entertaining.

•the Ray films. I haven't seen them, but the Apu trilogy and The Music Room (criminally underseen) are great.

At least there is a good reason that one is delayed. Presumably, it has to do with Cuaron being so busy.

I mean, 3 Satyajit Ray films, 5 Rainer Werner Fassbinder films, a Lubitsch starring the gorgeous Carole Lombard, The Earrings of Madame... (widely-regarded as one of the greatest films of all-time), and Seconds (a great, tense sci-fi tinged B-thriller)...that is a pretty decent line-up. 11 films, 5 nations, spanning 4 decades. Everyone's tastes are different, but it's hard to believe anyone interested in Criterion in general would scoff at this output. And yet this thread is teeming with disregard. You're doing yourselves an injustice by writing off stuff that you don't know yet, IMHO.

IIRC A Brighter Summer Day was confirmed in 2009 and that film hasn't had a single release in the world other than Chinese Video CD, adding to the fact that Yang is probably my favourite director and this is supposedly one of his masterpieces, the wait has been a little painful.

Come to think of it I have seen TBONTB, it was one of the million films I saw in film school, I do remember liking it however.

On the watchlist!

Please give Earrings of Madame De. a chance....a Plot synopsis doesn't compare with what you'll see. It has spectacular camera movement and very tight storytelling.

Just The Earings of Madame, which I have very little interest in seeing again.

The answer is the same every month: none.

As usual, a very nice assortment of films. This year Criterion has really stepped up with many great titles. Count me in for Seconds, To Be or Not to Be and The Earrings of Madame De. I cannot believe next month we will be going into the Fall releases. This year is just flying by.

Only the Fassbinder set, which, like someone else stated, I wish was in Blu.

Oh well.

The Man Who Fell To Earth: Auctioned off an item on ebay that gave me the capital to purchase this for $190 of paypal money.
Chungking Express won on ebay for $55.
Army of Shadows purchased on Amazon for 20.
Léon Morin, Priest purchased used on Amazon for 20

My luck was bad at first and better recently.
Yes, I still have the email that I wrote (on November 23, 2009 at 3:32 AM) to a friend about "The Man Who Fell to Earth" where I boasted that I bought this for 85% off! If you ever find a way to combine a 25% off coupon in conjunction with a 50% off sale (with 10% member discount on top of that) at Barnes & Noble, you will be one happy person.

It's not a question of having seen them, or them being great or not. It's also a question of simple and plain subjective interest.

In all these movies, I've only seen the Lubitsch. Why ? Well, because that's why I'm buying stuff from Criterion : to discover new films I've never seen !

So having seen them or not is, for me, completely irrelevant.

However, there will still be movies that just don't look especially exciting. Last months, there were Marketa Lazarova, Things to Come and Life Is Sweet. As good as they might be (and I will buy them all 3 anyway ), I wouldn't say that was exciting news for me.

However, one definite disappointment, again, is the Fassbinder box. If I wanted to have English-friendly boxsets of Fassbinder, I would have bought the Arrow boxsets, with which you can almost have 15 movies for £50.

I'd love HD releases for these movies, and as such, this Eclipse box will definitely be a no-go for me.

At one moment, I had 2 copies of TMWFTE.
I bought one about 80€, then found another one for 10€. I sold the first one, and in the end, paid about 20€ for it. Quite nice deal.

I also bought 20€ a used copy of The Third Man.
As for Chungking, Army of Shadows and all, I bought them some time ago, so it was pretty easy. I even got the Carlos Saura Eclipse box when it was back in stock on Amazon last year.

Another Le Samourailess month passes by.

On the bright side, I'm pumped up about Seconds, and it looks to be right up my alley. To Be or Not to Be looks wonderful as well, and I love the cover art.

For every one of us whining about August being a weak month, there are probably ten Satyajit Ray fans pumping their fists in the air and dancing in the streets. One of these days, I'll check out one of his movies and end up being one of those fans. It's all good.

I was browsing through the thread to see what this month's announcements were and almost had a heart attack when I saw you mention Frankenheimer. I thought it would be The Train which I've been waiting for on Blu-ray. However, I'll take Seconds as I've not yet seen it but would like to.
