I wasn't attacking him, but I think if he meant to see them, he'd leave open the option of buying them if they appealed to him.

I fell in love with a lot of stuff on a 12" black-and-white tv.

When I wasn't walking to and from school, that is. In the snow. Uphill. Both ways.

I will never own all of the Blu Rays that I would like to own.

Only recently getting an all-region player means I have less than 25 of the Criterion releases so far, for example - I am always going to be playing catch-up there.

So if I have to choose between the two (and I do, in that I have finite money and storage space) AND given that they will likely eventually be released on Blu, I immediately discount films on DVD at this point.

If I can watch them on DVD or digitally before then, I will happily watch them.

My love of movies originated in the early 1980s, when I had a small black-and-white television in my bedroom and spent many evenings or rainy days watching horror movies via Elvira's Movie Macabre or badly dubbed martial arts films via Kung Fu Theater while bad commercials for car title loan companies or psychic hotlines aired.

John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 was a favorite staple back then, and I was glued to the set every time it aired. I own that movie on crystal-clear Blu-ray now in its proper aspect ratio, and it still trips me out to see the film in color.

I'm so excited to see a watchable version of Charulata! I rented it on DVD a couple years ago and it was unwatchable. The subtitles were out of sync with the dialogue, and let's not get started on that picture quality...

If you are OK with DVD, also check out the Jean-Louis Trintignant gangster film. It is really good. I am very pleased that it was released because it was only available on VHS.

In all these movies, I've only seen the Lubitsch. Why ? Well, because that's why I'm buying stuff from Criterion : to discover new films I've never seen !

I agree it's subjective, but when I ask if someone has seen the pictures it's to find out whether they are ignoring out of experience or out of ignorance. At least you're planning to still see some films that weren't your ideal wishlist.

As far as "greatness," we've all got "classics" that we don't like. But shouldn't a "great" picture's status at least inspire curiosity? "Meh." Take that, Max Ophuls.

I'd just like to see what constitutes a "strong" month in most people's subjective opinions.

I too am rather bemused by the "this is a weak month" comments. Of course people have a right to express their personal preferences, but it seems some folks don't know how to put it in terms of "this is how I feel" rather than "this is the objective truth".

To those that say it's a weak month for releases - I urge you to consider that a month where Max Ophuls and Ernst Lubistch both have one of their best movies released to high definition is something worth celebrating. Andrew Sarris ranked Madame De is his best or favourite movie ever, for a while (I think it was after he had previously ranked Lola Montes as is no. 1).

And then we have a Frankenheimer movie with B&W cinematography from James Wong Howe. Nothing weak about that.

For what it's worth, I am glad to hear that. I have limits, too -- the worst of which is limited time. However, I still buy DVDs -- and even watch VHS -- when necessary. I'd rather have a DVD of something I will rewatch again and again than wait for a Blu-ray that may never come, or spend the money on Blu-rays I'd like less and watch less.

Probably, I haven't been here long enough.

I get people saying they are or aren't interested in the films, I just don't understand people then getting mad at them.

Just engage with those other people who are excited, or say something about the amazing films that might help create interest.

There are so many happy people, that it seems odd to focus on the ones who just don't care.
