Very funny but a little sad also since it's one of the final Ozu films and is his last with Setsuko Hara. I love Ozu and particularly enjoy these lighter fims like this, I Was Born, But..., and it's remake Good Morning.
TCM has been airing the late Ozu series, one film per week. I've recorded Early Spring, Early Summer, and Late Autumn. Watched Early Spring over the past weekend and, just like every other film I've seen of his (save for Equinox Flower), I was floored. Ozu is the humanistic director.

Can't wait to watch the rest of his seasonal films.

Another heads up: in the latest episode of the Cinephiliacs, Ben Model, a silent film composer, and Peter Lebuza discuss Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times.

But part of it is also that I think the early added scenes on LV-421, where the derelict ship is discovered, destroys the deliberate pacing of the theatrical cut. In the theatrical cut, the suspense of what had happened to the colony was really drawn out to the max and had people setting on the edge of their seats. IIRC Cameron actually says somewhere in the extras on the Anthology BD set, that he probably would not have added those scenes today.
I prefer the theatrical cut of Aliens as well.

Getting my Melville on starting tonight. Leon Morin, Priest followed by the Army of Shadows commentary track and capping it off with Le Cercle Rouge. Can't wait to dive into these.

Godfrey Reggio (the man behind the Qatsi trilogy) announced his new film's premiere today. Playing at TIFF, it's going to be accompanied by an introduction from Steven Soderbergh as well as a live orchestra to perform the film's score. Needless to say, if I am still in the province come TIFF this year, this is undoubtedly my most sought after screening.

Default Lola Montes

Last night, I watched Lola Montes for the first time. I had been reading that Stanley Kubrick idolized Max Ophuls and decided to "blind buy" it. I was absolutely blown away with the production. The opening shot is one of the greatest in film history (The Conversation and Boogie Nights are my other two favorites.) Ophuls beautifully tells the story in a very creative way. Without a doubt, it is Peter Ustinov's best performance. I could clearly see the directorial choices that influenced Kubrick. Just a great, great film!

Yeah dude, the opening shot of Boogie Nights is amazing, reflects the Scorsese influence, at least I felt that way the last time I saw it.

Another great opening shot, in a film I watched for the first time today, a really nice Kino release, Los Bastardos. A really good movie, and a terrific, really long opening shot that sets the tone for a movie about mayhem and the mundane against the backdrop of Mexican migrant labor in southern california.

So guys...

Got two coupons from snail mail I haven't used yet.

Deciding which ones to get

Seven Samurai
Cronos
If...
Ivan's Childhoood
Salo or 120 Days

Everyone talks about Seven Samurai being one of Kurosawa's best so I'm really intrigued. Cronos would be my introduction to Del Toro's early stuff. If... I love the premise of it after reading the summary. Ivan's Childhood I'd love to pick it up. Finally 120 Days of Sodomy intrigues me the most. I watched the Criterion preview and it peaked my curiosity to say the least. I've seen it on the featured display endcap at B&N even though it's been out for quite a while (probably trying to get rid of it hahah). I'm more intrigued to watch it just because of the controversy.

Right now my picks would be Seven Samurai and 120 Days... with If... coming a close third. I mean I'm really going to blow my load in the July sale. I may just pick up some just for the hell of it anyways.

This is not from this thread but I didn't want to get too OT in the BN 40% off thread and derail it. This is by far the best place for it. In reference to Play Time getting re-released...

How likely do you guys think it really is that Play Time will get a re-release by Criterion? Money is tight right now and the only reason I bought it was to get it before all retail copies were gone and I am priced out of it. I see it's going for a pretty penny on Amazon snd EBay so I might just flip it if a re-release is likely on the horizon. It isn't a must own for me in the same sense as Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, and Last Year At Marienbad.
