Agreed. For all the great stuff TCM does, they almost always have Guest Programmers who pick obvious classic titles and use the same cliche lines-"I was completely blown away", etc. The choice of Drew Barrymore to co-host The Essentials was, to be charitable, "Ill advised." IMO

On a happier note: My daughter just told me she's getting me America Lost and Found and Two-Lane Blacktop for Father's Day. She never could keep a secret.......

Yeah, Drew Barrymore's pick of Alice doesn't live here anymore immediately ingratiated me to her. I also like the film she directed, Whip it.

Here is my question:

This week-end, can I purchase two Criterions for the current price of $23.99 and receive a third one that sells for the same price free, making it three for $47.98?
The 40% off sale specifies that it is not valid with any other sales or promotions. The store clerk could not ring up my 20% off coupon from last weekend with the 40%. Others on this site have been able to do so, though, so your mileage may vary. It may not hurt to try the 40% off in conjunction with the Buy-2-Get-1-Free deal. The worst they can do is laugh at you.

Be on the prowl for an online overlap. The few hours when the B2G1 overlapped with the 50% off sale resulted in a literal Christmas in July:rock

Not necessarily. Clerks have an ability to wriggle through holes that the website won't allow. The site never allows me to use coupons for items that are already on sale, for instance...the clerks at my local store, on the other hand, have no problem letting me do so.

Everything else I've come across, on here or ebay, is a digipak release.
About 3 weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to email Customer Service and they said they could ship me just the artwork for the blu-ray title for $5. So I sent the money through Paypal to Criterion and a week later I received a perfect sleeve of Last Year at Marienbad artwork in my mailbox. Since I already own the blu-ray clear cases, I just put the artwork in the blank case and now it looks great.

Hopefully they can hook me up. I haven't heard back from John about this, so I just sent another email to customer service. Did Marienbad ever get issued to retailers in a clear case? Almost every copy I've seen pop up on here or ebay is a digipak release. The couple I have seen that have a replacement case included are either asking a ton for it ($85ish) or are wanting to trade it, to which I have none of their wants.

I do not know the answer to this but my feeling is that it was only released in a digipak format, based on all available data.

It would really be great if you could buy a digital version of the various out of print Criterion artwork and then you can just take this and print it out on high quality paper yourself. However, the folks at Criterion told me this is not currently available as an option. I don't know why buy I really love the clear case option over the digipak option, only because it makes everything more consistent.

I believe The Third Man, and Last Year at Marienbad both went out of print before they started to release movies going forward with the plastic cases, so there is plastic case versions sold, just replacement cases (at the time)

The Man Who Fell To Earth may fall into that category too.... not sure.

Drew has good picks but she couldn't possibly come across as more of an airhead...she has nothing interesting to say to Robert Osborne haha

The copy of The Third Man that I bought not long before it went out of print actually came with the plastic case. I've never seen "Last Year..." or "The Man..." in one though.

FWIW, my copy of The Third Man purchased new came in a plastic case, also. Of that initial batch, it was the only one I ended up getting in a plastic case.

Nick Offerman on Rashomon, one of his favorite films:

Quote:
[Akira] Kurosawa's Rashomon. I mean, any Kurosawa blows my mind out my ass. We did a production of Rashomon that was actually a play. We did that at my college. We had this amazing sword teacher named Robin McFarquhar, and that was one of his big triumphs, was this production of Rashomon. It's such a cool play, because you do it four times in a row, and you get everybody's perspective. You know, one time the samurai is brave, one time he's a coward. It's really delicious for the actors.

Just a heads up. When paired with the 25% off sale at Deepdiscount, The BBS set can be had for $68.81

http://www.deepdiscount.com/bluray/A...R-715515064415

Wow! The David O Selsnick 5 movie set can be had for $39.17

Yojimbo/Sanjuro for $36.29
Pierre Etaix for $35.78

A bunch of other Criterions are marked from $22 to $24

Wow! Pina for $23. That's over 50%

But most others are several dollars cheaper on B&N. So do your own check before buying at DD, I guess.
Furthermore, DD often mishandles digipacks.

I will get Piña, though.
