I saw Easy Rider when it came out and, being 18 at the time, it made a huge impression on me (and my friends). We all ran out, bought motorcycles, and traveled America! Not really, but that and anger about the fates of the three main characters were the emotions I came away with the multiple times I saw it that year. It was a powerful film that reflected the change taking place at the time. The Summer(s) of Love were over. The previous year's assassinations and riots, the escalating Vietnam War, the Manson murders, etc were all events showing how far removed from the peace and love vibe of Woodstock we had come.

Thanks for sharing that. I would have loved to have seen Easy Rider when it first came out. The movie still packs a punch today, but to have seen it upon release must have really been something else.

When I saw Easy Rider for the first time several years ago, I was really taken off guard by the final half of the film. The symbolism of those final scenes is just off the chain.

Not to reveal any real spoilers, but the final scene in Easy Rider is so incredible with its timing. The camera shows a fire from above (filmed by helicopter), then pans over and away to a river. It must have been a real challenge to get the timing just right with that scene.

I should have mentioned the other thing that everyone who saw the film back then noted was the performance of Jack Nicholson. It was a star making role and Jack was on his way!

I wonder if I'll ever get lucky finding a nice used copy of The Third Man and end up not spending too much money. This would be a miracle of course. Will I give in and spend triple digits eventually? Or will I wait another year or two and somehow find this at a better price? Hmmmmm.
Realistically you'll only find it "cheap" if you stumble upon a copy offline, in a secondhand store or a really, really, REALLY low traffic B&N . Online, there will always be someone else who knows its value and will outbid you, even if the seller doesn't realize the value.

I spent $70 in January 2011 and never regretted it because it's a favorite of mine. I've spent more for concert tickets, books, meals. This is something I get to enjoy repeatedly, and unlike most things it appreciates in value.

Triple digits might seem ridiculous but assuming you have disposable income you can put it together if you try. Eat out less, skip Starbucks for a week, etc. -- whatever your moneysuck is. You can find a way to afford it, and no one but you ever needs to know how much you spent.

Very funny. A really low trafficked B&N! Maybe if B&N existed in Greenland, there's a chance a copy of The Third Man might still be in stock. I totally missed the boat on this title, but then again I didn't start buying BDs until the fall of 2011.

Recently a local video rental store went out of business and I actually asked an employee there if they had The Third Man in BD. They only had it in DVD format and after inspecting it, the discs were pretty scratched and the cardboard case was all torn and damaged. But I'm sure they probably sold some of their discs to the public. I guess asking people how much they spent on this OOP item may be inappropriate as you say that nobody really needs to know how much one spent on it. I would just feel guilty I actually spent that much money on a film that I may only watch a few times in my life (its a good movie but its not one of my favorites either).

Thanks again for your thoughts.

Simply because Criterion has never let me down with any blind buy and they haven't disappointed me with the picture and audio quality on their releases. Now having said that, I passed on buying Playtime because the picture quality got better scores on other releases and Criterion said they will be releasing it again in the future so I'll wait for the better version.
I was lucky to buy Playtime at the July 50% Criterion sale last year for a total of around $16. It is a movie I can watch far more often than The Third Man and this is because of its unique "non-story". I personally think that Playtime is highly re-watchable and makes it all the more worth owning. Very glad to have this.

I just got shivers running up and down my spine when I saw that too as I've been called that name most of my life (though my first name is spelled Jon (short for Jonathan), not John).

I wonder if Amazon is going to price match the sale like they did around Black Friday last year... Either way, Barnes and noble will probably be having their 50% off sale soon.

Criterion worthy and badly needs a blu-ray upgrade. Features some of the best cinematography.

It seems like they excluding a select set of DVDs. The Human Condition is still 89.99

50% off at best buy with Amazon matching prices, always nice. Just put in an order with Best Buy picking up 3:10, Jubal, Ministry, and The Magician. Just waiting for Wild Strawberries to drop now from one of them.

I pulled the trigger on 11 at Best Buy. That still leaves me a few I need to get at the B&N sale (Shallow Grave, Battle of Algiers, The Human Condition, and the Eclipse sets for Fuller and Kobayashi). I'll then be caught up on all the Criterion stuff that I've seen and want. But there's obviously still tons of stuff I want to watch and will probably blind buy.
