Silly question and I can't believe I'm asking this. I've never seen the Thin Red Line. I've read countless reviews and simply can't decide. I've watched online clips and it looks to be a depressingly brutal sense of what war truly is. I must admit I'm not a huge fan of Terrence Malick's style, but I'm fascinated with anything World War II. This has to be one of the top selling Criterions and seems to be in many people's top 5. Is this a safe blind buy if one is expecting more of a character study instead of a "typical" and action packed war movie? Thanks in advance, guys.

It's one of Malick's best works, in my opinion.

The visuals alone make the grim reality of war seem a lot more peaceful, if that makes any sense.

It's my favorite film of all time, so I will always recommend it. It's far more than an action packed war film. It took me more than once to actually appreciate it. It's more linear and easier to follow than Malick's latest work, but still has that "experimental" vibe to it. Truly a modern masterpiece.

Yea, you're safe to buy. I don't particularly like Malick (god I couldn't STAND Tree of Life, take my art film card from me if you will) but Thin Red Line strikes a great balance between his "normal" style and an actual film with like Plot and stuff.

Only Blu Ray Criterion I bought today was Summer Interlude.

Haven't seen any of these movies but I heard Ace In The Hole was a very good movie.

The one I am most enthusiastic about is Colonel Blimp. Not only is it a gorgeous film, it is deeply moving.

I like Leon Morin Priest a lot - it's more of a character study, basically a series of (fantastic) conversations. Depends on what kinds of movies you like I guess! Definitely my favorite by Melville.

I know you're confident about it, but Following is absolutely the most disposable of the 4 I've seen.

The Thin Red Line is nowhere near as viscerally brutal as many other WWII films from this era (Saving Private Ryan, etc.). I first saw The Thin Red Line in the theater upon its release in 1998, and, having seen Saving Private Ryan earlier that year, I was braced for an oppressive nonstop wave of violence similar to what I had seen in that Spielberg film. The difference in the beach landing sequences in the two films sets the tone, though, and The Thin Red Line plays out in a much more subtle way at first.

There are a couple of intense battle sequences in The Thin Red Line, but the film is more concerned with the gradual effect on a person's psyche in wartime, and, as such, the film ultimately leaves a deep scar. The Thin Red Line is also more concerned with the interplay of humans and the everpresent majesty of nature.

The Thin Red Line is a much quieter film than one might expect, and, for that reason, many viewers were turned off. It's a wondrous film simply to look at, though, and virtually every still frame deserves a pause.

The only reason I'm confident about it is because I'm a huge Christopher Nolan fan and would like to own it, I might consider leaving it off the list in that case
