I have become quite a fan of silent films the last year or two so I hope to continue seeing excellent silent films make their way to blu-ray. However I agree. I need Vampyr on blu-ray. I just caved and bought the DVD set so I've for something to tide me over until it happens. Knowing my luck, it'll happen some time soon.

If so, I'll be more than happy about that. I'll easily be able to resell my DVD set on eBay for what I payed and with there being several months between criterion announcements and release dates I'll have more than enough time to do that. I can't imagine they'll release the huge book for the blu release though... The DVD set looks pretty damn chunky for just one movie. The blu-ray would be slightly wider with having to make the book shorter. That's probably a silly thing to presume but somehow I feel they'll just include the booklet but keep the book a DVD exclusive. Who knows.

I watched The Great Dictator for the first time tonight. I've only gotten into silent films in the last year or so, excluding Nosferatu which I've loved since I was young. The only Chaplin's I've watched so far are The Gold Rush, Modern Times and now The Great Dictator. I've got Monsieur Verdoux on it's way and am really looking or forward to it.

TGD had some really brilliant moments all throughout it but I didn't enjoy it overall quite as much as the other 2 I had seen before this one. It wasn't that TGD wasn't as good, it's just that the others were just THAT good. However when it was over, I felt like there was something else to it. I watched the 55 minute documentary afterwards and my respect and appreciation for TGD has gone up A LOT.

While I still appreciate the humour of TGD, I now feel the movie has that weight I felt was missing to really make an impact. Apparently I just needed a tiny more context and a few more perspectives to appreciate some details I hadn't quite considered or appreciated first time around.

I now feel TGD is on par with the others. I really can't wait to experience more Chaplin. Considering he's only really getting one release a year, I feel I may need to seek out other means of at least getting my fix. However being in Australia, it's not as easy to get a hold of a decent quality transfer outside illegally downloading which I would prefer to not do.

I hope we get a little more horror out of Criterion soon. There are so many releases I'd love to see from them, Freaks being my most wanted.

I'm also hoping me get some more Kurosawa soon.

Thanks for the recommendation. As I've only seen 3 Chaplin flicks I don't think Ive seen quite enough to justify a purchase like that. How much genuine entertainment does that Chaplin at Keystone box set provide? It sounds more like a curiosity than something Ill likely watch more than once. Quite expensive for DVD's too but that's Flicker Alley's prices for you.

EDIT: I noticed that it's considerably cheaper at amazon UK. It's been released through BFI though... Is it the same content and restorations just distributed by a different studio?

Agree'd. I would love more horror from Criterion.
I think they kinda NEED to speed up their Kurosawa releases... I am probably way off, but don't they have like 27 Kurosawa titles? If they keep releasing them at this pace I'd be suprised if we get even half of them on blu-ray before whatever the next format is takes over...

Great list.

It's too bad Big Fan isn't on BluRay. He was exceptional in that film.

I don't really care for the word, but that film is the definition of "underrated." It's a shame it has become a bargain bin title. I think I picked the DVD up for $2.99.

They likely won't release any of the Kurosawa movies found in the Eclipse series sets, so that would eliminate 9 movies there, but they absolutely need to release The Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, Drunken Angel, Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, and Drunken Angel.

Would it kill them to release some more Ozu while we're at it? Tokyo Story, Floating Weeds, An Autumn Afternoon all need some HD love in the US.

Agreed. I hope they release the original Carrie on Oct. because the current BD is horrible and it deserves a better treatment.

Thumbs up

Count me in for wanting more horror, sci-fi and fantasy films from the big C Be it upgrades or new stuff ...
I wish there was some studio that would do a release of On The Comet with English language and Czech language. Criterion would be great choice for that.
And there is a great release of Seddok aka Atom Age Vampire that would be so cool if Criterion did an HD release of it that is just like the German release with all the versions, language, extras etc...
