I've never purchased a Blu-ray that I did not at least have an urge to watch that same day. If I buy ten Blu-rays at one time, it's because I have a genuine desire to watch all of them, but I prioritize by putting the one that I'm the most fired up to see at the bottom of the stack.

Funny you should say that. I'm about to sit down with a cigar and a movie and while mulling my choices I found myself thinking 'you know, if The Lady Vanishes goes right to the shelf it's going to sit there for at least a year'.

Well there you go then, decision made.

We are very different you and I.

Side note: Criterion should release a disaster flick

It most certainly does, although not on the same grand disaster scale.

Until Peter Weir's The Last Wave is upgraded to Criterion Blu-ray, it appears as though A Night to Remember is the best disaster film that we've got.

Non-topic-related, but funny nonetheless...

A couple of years ago, I was working on the gym treadmill while Entertainment Tonight! was showing on the gym television. They ran a feature on the Costa Concordia disaster, and referred to it as the "Real-Life Titanic."
I was somewhat taken aback at this news story. Hmmm... Why didn't anyone tell me that the Titanic was fictional?

No prob. I found out about this via Criterion's email newsletter. I already own the Howard's End blu-ray as well as the Maurice DVD, but there are so many other Merchant Ivory films that had been released by Criterion. (Click here.)

Anyone who's familiar with the soon to be OOP Merchant Ivory DVD series: which titles would you recommend I buy? I'm thinking of buying a few during the upcoming B&N 50% off sale.

It's a very good movie, but for some reason it didn't come immediately to mind.

Octagon, pop in Heaven's Gate, light a cigar and you'll see the error of your statement. Heavens Gate is one of the best films in the collection (yes, I am very familiar with the UA bankruptcy and general fallout)

I don't have time for Heaven's Gate this afternoon but we've talked about this before - I was already pretty hooked by the chunk I caught on TCM a ways back.

Speaking of hooked, I'm not a huge The Lady Vanishes fan but I'm already enjoying it more than the first couple times.

And people say 'why would you buy something you don't really like'. I mean, I completely understand that question but...

I definitely remember that. And you don't know how glad I was to read that post all those months back. Furthermore, the beginning (the super drawn out graduation speech) is one of the more indulgent and flat (harsh adjective) parts of Heavens Gate, so it may very well be up your ally.

Enjoy it!

I took advantage of the WB Shop sale on the Rio Bravo Blu-ray for $10. They must have repressed a few copies, and it's better than paying $47 on Amazon. With my luck, Criterion will probably announce this movie next month, but I miss my old DVD of the movie and have had a hankering to watch it again. One of my favorite John Wayne flicks.

For a fun triple feature night, watch Rio Bravo, then the 1968 Night of the Living Dead, and, finally, the original John Carpenter version of Assault on Precinct 13. It's basically the same storyline in all three movies, but each movie brings a unique flavor to the framework.

Today, I received Rules of the Game (La règle du jeu) and Carlos in the mail from Amazon.com. Both movies are still at 50% discount of cover price. I'll be getting Army of Shadows (L'armée des ombres) as well.
