I absolutely love that last scene with Nick Cave. This is what makes the film a winner in my opinion. Nick Cave rocks!

I've harped on The Wages of Fear a lot on this forum, but still not enough. It's one of the most tension-filled adventure movies in history.

Wings of Desire is a beautiful film that is haunting and uplifting at the same time. The soundtrack is ace.
haha thanks Safety Last! looks awesome. I've really gotten into silent films the last year and a half. I love the way they're being treated on blu-ray too. Such love and respect for the most part.

I know you have :P so have many others so I decided it's time I get it. I also listened to your mad ravings about Melville's films and decided to pull the trigger just as they were going OOP (got them for $23.99 and $26.99). Started watching Le Cercle Rouge yesterday but haven't had a chance to finish it. My girlfriend and I are in the process of a Dexter marathon before we start watching the final season so that's been taking up almost all of my movie-watching time.

It's great so far but I do agree with the main reviews that the colder palette seems like it'd be more visually suitable. Not sure why Criterion seems to change these french films to a more natural colour scheme. Considering selling my Criterion release and grabbing the SC release. Looks like it may have better special features anyway.

Once I finish Le Cercle Rouge eventually, I'll have to check out Army of Shadows.

Really love Nick Cave too, however he's in bad terms with me. His screenplay for Lawless was downright awful. Luckily the film was saved by some expert digital cinematography and insanely good lighting.

It was two+ hours of long dialogue so if you're patient, you may find it very rewarding.
Thanks for the reassurance guys. I think it'll be my type of film and yes, I do like Nick Cave! Sounds interesting.

If the actual dialogue is great and the acting, cinematography and music is good, I don't mind movies that are very talky. If they're kind of bland all around, they do become tedious after a while. For example, I thought Cosmopolis was an interesting film. Didn't bore me or bother me even though it was extremely "talky".

Could I get some help shrinking this list?

Colors Trilogy
High and Low
Paris, Texas
on the waterfront
man who fell to earth
wild strawberries
blow out
8 1/2
The red shows
marketa lazarova

I am new to criterion and this took me awhile to come up with because I have so much to catch up on. I really can't afford this big a haul so I would appreciate some help. Also if there is anything I should add to the list I would appreciate that too.

Deepbreaths,
It's got the right amount of talkiness if you ask me.

You haven't seen City of Angels by any chance, have you?

My two personal favorites are Red Desert and Solaris. That said, your list is pretty fantastic as it is. You located a colt of The Man Who Fell to Earth?

Well, you can scratch off TMWFTE as its been OOP for quite a while. Beyond that, I'd go for: 3 Colors; Paris, Texas; OTW; Red Shoes. I haven't seen Marketa yet but it's on its way to me and I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

I found Lawless to be an enjoyable film. Not perfect, but enjoyable. I can definitely see where people didn't like it but technically it was gorgeous, the acting was great and Tom Hardy was hilarious. Funnily enough, I actually thought Lawless was shot on 16mm film during my theatrical showing!

Didn't look bad at all. I remember thinking how cool it was that they shot it on 16mm and that it looked nice in it's soft, grainy glory. You can imagine my surprise when I read the review here that it was shot digitally and the screenshots didn't really look like what I saw... No idea what happened.

If I would choose 5, they are in bold. Consider Safety Last, Seven Samurai and In the Mood for Love if you don't have them yet.

Hope this helps..50% CC title at Barnes and Noble starting tomorrow!

The Man Who Fell to Earth is out of print and will only be available from third-party sellers which means it will be very expensive to start and it won't be half-off during the sale.

Other than that, no. It's a pretty damn good list

The six I've seen are excellent and the four I haven't
[Show spoiler](Wild Strawberries, 8 1/2, The Red Shoes, Marketa Lazarova)
are all very highly regarded.

At least his screenplay for The Proposition was great.

The Arri Alexa is among the most "film like" cameras out there.

Notable films shot by the camera:
•Drive
•Extremely Loud (poor film, superb look)
•Hugo
•Melancholia
•Amour
•Life of Pi
•Skyfall
•Zero Dark Thirty

...and I'm sure this October we can add Gravity to the list.

The Proposition is a phenomenal film. On second thought, I forgive him for penning Lawless.

The Three Colors Trilogy is my favorite on your list. The Double Life Of Veronique (not listed) is my favorite Criterion and all-time favorite film of all time!

Blow Out comes with Murder à la mod, which gives you 2 films for the price of 1. On The Waterfront and Paris, Texas are very good, as well.

A lot of people like The Red Shoes, so you can't go wrong with that either. A lot of individuals also like 8 1/2, but I really hated it. I didn't see anything spectacular about it.

With the mention of religious films, has anyone here seen John Ford's The Fugitive? It's a dark, noirish, beautifully filmed story that doesn't get (IMO) the recognition it deserves. Would make a nice addition to The CC.

Everything I've seen from this list is tops, but the Three Colors trilogy and Paris, Texas rank the highest for me.
