The price on Shoah with the coupon is tempting...is it still worth a look for someone that isn't interested in the subject matter at all?

I haven't seen Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. I should get on that. I think the "obsession that leads to consumption that leads to self-destruction" could possibly be used to describe the public's response to the case profiled in In the Realm of the Senses.

I've seen it. It's not very balanced and the ending deflates the whole film. I suppose it is important as far as Roeg's films go as he developed and used his elliptical style pretty successfully in it.

On another note, did anyone notice that the 50% Criterion Collection Sale banner on B&N says "through 11/19"? That is, November 19th? As in this sale will last until the time of the year the typical second (November) sale ends?

not sure about that, but i am watching it now, and its interesting. the 1st part is 2 hours 30 min,
I would assume you would have to be into the subject matter since it's just interviews with holocaust survivors and nazis

I am a history major at my school so to me this was the only criterion release I was looking forward to and if i didn't get it in a trade from a friend i would be all over the 40 something price for it at b&n

it's super interesting though, but who knows you might like it. you could probably always trade it on this site if you bought it and didn't like it or sell it for close to what you paid for

I am new to Criterion and this took me awhile to come up with because I have so much to catch up on. I really can't afford this big a haul so I would appreciate some help. Also if there is anything I should add to the list I would appreciate that too.
All of these are worth getting, and I'd almost say just go ahead and buy them in that order.

However, I'd recommend starting with the COLORS Trilogy (which seems to be a consensus so far), and then getting PARIS, TEXAS, followed by WILD STRAWBERRIES and ON THE WATERFRONT.

Titles not on your list to consider certainly should include NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, YOJIMBO (with SANJURO), THE SEVENTH SEAL, THE GOLD RUSH, MODERN TIMES, SAFETY LAST, THE LADY VANISHES, THE 39 STEPS, CHARADE, LEON MORIN PRIEST, RULES OF THE GAME, THE FOUR FEATHERS, the David Lean box set, THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE, ISLAND OF THE LOST SOULS, THE 400 BLOWS, BREATHLESS, and the BBS "America Lost & Found" collection. If you're interested in live theatre and/or Gilbert & Sullivan, you absolutely need to get TOPSY-TURVY, and if you like that, you should probably also get THE MIKADO. For some more recent titles on Criterion, get EVERLASTING MOMENTS, SUMMER HOURS, STILL WALKING, KID WITH A BIKE, PINA, CRONOS, and IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE. (Don't forget to check out a few key classic and foreign films from Kino and Olive as well!)

Of course there are tons more worth getting but that ought to get you started on a decent representative Criterion collection. If you can bear the lower picture quality, try some of the free Hulu streaming Criterion titles first.

Definitely check out MCML! David Bowie as the lead actor was simply a revelation in that film. It is truly an engaging film and I guarantee you, you will be happy with a blind buy purchase.

i blind bought mcml a while back about a year or 2 ago, during one of these sales since i knew the main song from a dj mix, the movie itself though i found boring and even though i wanted to give it another chance after the 1st 2, i could never go back to it

It's an interesting film with good performances and intriguing character dynamics. I saw it theatrically when it first came out. It's worth revisiting on occasion (I've got Criterion's Blu-ray), but it's not really the kind of film I'd watch frequently.

And I just realized -- should we be referring to the films as "1950" as a shortcut (MCML)?

Just watched Robinson Crusoe On Mars. Oh my goodness was that a struggle to get through. The chunk in the middle was ok, but the beginning and end were so so uninteresting.....I think this is now the most boring movie I own.

Hahah I felt similarly on my first viewing. I'd recommend hanging onto it though. I watched it a second time at like 2am while playing on my phone and it was quite a bit of late night fun. Great background noise and lovely retro visuals. I respect those who are fans of this film but personally, I think you and I just took the viewing experience too seriously and that contributed to the somewhat unpleasant experience. Worth giving it another shot when you don't want to pay attention.

I just received the texts from the Barnes & Noble in my neighborhood that the movies I reserved are being held for me.

"Na, na, na
Gonna have a good time
Hey, hey, hey!
Na, na, na
Gonna have a good time
Hey, hey, hey!"

No!i think it's a really fun, ridiculous movie. It's also a stunner in HD.

Agreed. I really enjoy Robinson Crusoe on Mars, but at the same time I can see how it isn't for everyone. I think it is one of those movies that you have to either be in the right mood, or have a certain kind of taste to enjoy.

In case anyone didn't know, Babette's Feast is 50% off at B&N even though it's a pre-order. I plumped for this and Man Who Knew Too Much, and a couple of non-CC movies - Mel Brooks' The Producers and Sidney Lumet's Murder on The Orient Express (DVD). Most of the CC stuff on my wishlist is still far away and not eligible for the sale price.

I think a good chunk of the fans of this are like me, that grew up watching it on Saturday afternoons as a kid. Similar to The Blob in that way.
