Especially on the Criterion forum.

I dunno. Despite everything she's been through, I still like her.

Yeah there's definitely a great selection to choose from. I was just asking because there's a few ones that I want to see (Fish Tank, Following, Devil's Backbone) that aren't on there at the moment.

I watched Badlands today.

Terrence Malick is one of the directors I've been cautious about approaching, after trying to watch The Thin Red Line in my early teens and being perplexed beyond all belief. "Accessible" isn't the word that many people use to describe his films, and as such, my assumption is that it takes a bit of effort to truly appreciate them. This is my first time seeing Badlands, his very first movie, and this one was a hit with me. The minute the theme song from this movie started I was saying "Where the hell do I know that song from?" - it's the same music from True Romance, another great film. I've had this song stuck in my head all day now, and actually grabbed it from iTunes, too.

Anyways, Badlands - small town South Dakota, a young Martin Sheen courts an even younger red headed texan, and they fall in love. Sheen's character, being a bit of a recluse, gets himself into some trouble, and together, they go on the run. A killing spree ensues, as they travel from state to state and scour for food and other goods. It's one of those films where the threat of being caught is always hanging just above the viewer's head, but Malick films it in such a way that it's such a relaxing, serene film, albeit the subject matter. I enjoyed the film start to finish, and it's great at juxtaposing Malick's images of nature and beauty with the grisly sight of the ensuing violence.

I got the trilogy during the last sale in store and I had to send the white disc in as it was the faulty version. I actually guessed to myself that I got the faulty edition because of the date on the B&N price sticker: it was actually the release date of the blu so I knew right then that I had to send it in, but I wanted the discounts in store and I even got the gift certificate from Criterion because of having to have it replaced.
Crap...I just checked the price sticker on the Three Colors I picked up today...11/11...the release date. Sooo I guess I got a bad one?

Who else here adores The Killing?

I just watched it tonight and it blew my mind away. The pacing, acting and the flow of the story instantly put it up there with Dr. Strange-love and 2001: A Space Odyssey as my 3 favorite Kubrick films.

Who else is a fan of The Killing, I personally thought it was nothing short of brilliant.

Absolutely love The Killing. I'm huge fan of heist films - especially Heat - and The Killing seemed to lay the ground work for many of them. Also it's a film that came way before its time, utilizing the time shifts in the plot (except for Rashomon - that was six years prior to Kubrick's work )

I also recommend you check out Melville's Le Cercle Rouge, as well as Le Deuxiemme Souffle.

Yeah, I definitely need to check those out. Thanks for the recommendation!

I think my favorite aspect of The Killing is the dialogue and how it fits perfectly with the tone of the film.

Me. It's my second favorite crime film of all time, behind only John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle.

Has anyone ever had a problem with their criterion blu before?

I was watching Summer Hours, and at the 51 minute mark it freezes, gets choppy, and skips.

It sucks because I was enjoying the movie very much and then buzzkill. I was watching it on my PS3 first, and it froze. When I tried to re-play the disc it said "Disc Cannot Be Played Error". I have a very old original PS3 so I thought it might've been the problem. So I went in the other room to try my blu-ray player and I jumped to the part right before it skips, and low and behold it skipped again.

Not only did I not get to finish the movie, but I had my first criterion dud. It skipped the next chapter of which was like less than 2 minutes from the skipping part, but it was kind of choppy and I didn't want to watch the rest of the movie with it lagging like that.

Anybody know what's Criterion's policy on this? Don't think I can return it to Barnes and Noble since I got this two Thursdays ago. I'm hoping criterion they can send me a new disc... I was very attached to this movie on a personal level and to have it stop right in the middle... sucks big time.

I've had that problem with a number of recent Blu-ray releases, but never yet with a Criterion. Probably 95 percent of the discs that skip on the older LG player I normally use will play fine on my newer Sony player. I loved SUMMER HOURS (played it on a double feature with STILL WALKING for my regular basement screenings a couple years back, and don't remember it skipping).

This is my first blu-ray malfunction ever.

Sent an e-mail to the guy Criterion says to e-mail on their support page... hopefully he get sback to me and we can do something about it.

I really wanted to finish the movie! It really had me fully engaged, on a personal level and on an audience level. It froze just as
[Show spoiler]the three siblings + spouses are sitting in the room making the decision to sell and auction when Frederik leaves the room. It skips to the next chatper which is like a minute or two later but I'd hate to miss what happened plus it was still choppy and skipping when it was on the next chapter anyways.

Oh, wow. I have yet to watch my copy of Badlands, but Hans Zimmer's True Romance theme, "You're So Cool," has been my ringtone for as long as I can remember.

Now I'm finding out that the True Romance theme was basically an homage to Carl Orff's theme for Badlands? ...Just wow.

I just watched REVANCHE for the first time a few hours ago (got it in the current B&N half-price sale). It started off rather intriguing and then looked like it was going to be a fairly standard crime thriller about prostitution rings, a bank heist, and illegal immigrants. About halfway through, however, it switched gears dramatically and became a gripping, beautifully designed character-driven story about how people deal with life and death and each other and themselves. The settings, props, camera compositions, and editing really brought out the most from the already-powerful performances. It turns into something much more and much deeper than the trailer implies. Excellent blind buy!

I watched the interview with the director, and now I need to see the making-of documentary and the bonus film.

True Romance is definitely influenced by Badlands, but I actually find that Natural Born Killers (which originally started out as part of the same script) bears even more similarities to Badlands. If you are familiar with both of those Tarantino scribed flicks, then you'll definitely notice the similarities too when you watch it.

Yes, I think it's a great little crime flick, in fact I'm awaiting my own copy any day now to arrive in the mail.

One question though, if those are your three fave Kubrick films, how come your signature line claims that the Shining is your second fave movie of all time?

I know what you mean. I had (have?) a thing for Linda Blair especially when she was a party girl in the '80s. She was pretty wild but turned her life around so, hopefully, Tara can do that too.

Back to Criterions:
I was watching the TCM showings of David Lean's Great Expectations and Oliver Twist. Both superb films that need upgrades. The DVDs are bare bones so they'd seem to be good candidates for Blu.

ive watched "pale flower" yesterday. now that was really a cool movie that went out of the line. the whole movie has such a dark pessimistic tone yet still its so full of life / romantic. and the ending is probably one of the most well made endings i have ever seen.. these shots and the classic "remember me" song
