I almost get the impression that Bogart is too "mainstream" of an actor to be frequently added to Criterion's titles. That being said, they've done Jimmy Stewart justice.

In a Lonely Place for sure! Hell, I wouldn't mind High Sierra either.

Agree, the Solaris and Le Samourai DVD's were the two Criterion films that really got me interested in the collection.

Does anyone here like Ministry of Fear? I nearly bought this title during the recent sale but kept passing it up. I know Fritz Lang is a legendary director but for some reason his films are just too "intense" for me. "M" is not a film I can sit down, enjoy and re-watch many times for some reason. Can anyone else watch Fritz Lang's films a lot?

Ministry of Fear is ALOT lighter than M. I don't want to ruin the film, so I will say this: the thing that gets the thriller-ball rolling is comical to say the least.

Great! well, then I might just buy it when the next sale strikes (possibly the Criterion one in September).

Yeah, Ministry of Fear is more 39 Steps than M, for sure. It goes without saying that if you're looking for great 40's Lang, consider nabbing Scarlet Street. Kino's release is more than satisfactory.

I'll be watching Ministry of Fear for the first time at some point in the next week. I've only seen M, Metropolis, Die Nibelungen, Testament of Dr. Mabuse and The Big Heat of Lang's films so far.

I'd say if you're a fan of noir films, The Big Heat is one of the best. Mabuse is a great thriller too, easily re-watchable for me.

I love Ministry...it's a weird but fun hybrid of different types of films. Lighter than some for sure but thats part of it's charm.

Weinstein Thinks You Are Too Dumb For SNOWPIERCER

weinstein thinks the average american is to dumb for that movie, thats why they want a 20 min shorter cut. (probably they did the same thing to the grandmaster (wongkar wai) and wuxia (dragon) as well
(i got the uncut AU release )

Speaking of older movies that I'm surprised are not Criterion titles, I added Blu-ray #300 to my collection today.

I stopped by Movie Stop to browse around during lunch break (I ought to stop doing this.), and found a mint condition used copy of the 1927 movie, Wings. It's a blind buy, but I've always been intrigued to see it. It was the first Best Picture winner, the aerial fight sequences are rumored to be excellent, and Clara Bow is a decent retro hottie.

After The Gold Rush, Safety Last!, Nosferatu, and others, I'm always on the lookout for additions to my silent 1920s cinema collection.

While waiting for F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu, you should consider buying the region free Masters of Cinema version of Sunrise. I made the purchase through Amazon UK a few months ago and I am so glad that I did. It could be the best film of the 1920s. I also purchased Kino's Buster Keaton Collection through Import CDs and have been extremely happy.

Word around the campfire this week is that Sunrise is being released on these shores soon. I was reading the thread a day or two ago, and have pledged to wait. That movie is certainly in my sights either way!

The Buster Keaton box set is in my sights as well, but it's going to be months before I make that purchase. I'm biding my time.

'Pale Flower' was a great film and it's funny to think that Masahiro had a lot of trust in his leading actor. I forget his name but I was watching the special features on there and the way he entrusted his actor even though the actor admitted to not being the best at memorizing long lines was to me an unmatched relationship that I wouldn't think any director would have with an actor. But I guess when a director has a vision and whomever it is, they just have the gut feeling that this is the guy or woman I want as my lead. Any other Shinoda titles you would recommend?

You're gonna really like Sunrise. Note: the UK release can be had for very cheap over here in the States. ($13 in fact)

The price is right. I like Masters of Cinema, so I might bite down next month.

Bogart's last film The Harder They Fall would be a excellent candidate-great Budd Schulberg (On The Waterfront) boxing story.

i liked 2001 already alot but i prefer solaris much more.

i think i have seen the remake years ago but i didnt like it and dont remeber it all but Solaris will stay with me thats for sure. might watch it again with the commentary track.

Great Movie !

I will make sure to order Ivan's Childhood in the next sale
I'm a big fan of Tarkovsky (one DVD->BD upgrade I'd love to see is Andrei Rublev) but I found Solaris ponderous in spots. Make no mistake, I do like the film overall, but I don't think it's quite the work of genius its reputation would have it. Close, but not quite.

I actually prefer Soderbergh's remake.
