Things to Come isn't so much sci-fi value, as historical look at HG Wells' role in the pre-war Socialist sentiments of the time--Just as The Man Who Could World Miracles is more allegorical soapbox polemic than whimsical fantasy.
You don't so much watch either, as think, "Oh, so he really was that free-thinking Malcolm McDowell character from Time After Time!" ![]() |

Why are the two mutually exclusive? The "message" of Things to Come may be simplistic, but no more so than Metropolis (and the characters are equally wooden in each). Both feature impressive visuals, and ideas that hadn't really appeared in sci-fi movies before (had anyone done a ruined post-apocalyptic world before Things to Come, or an ultra clean and shiny, "rationally" organized future utopia?)

The Decalogue and Tarkovsky hopefully. The Passion of Joan of Arc would be wonderful, too. The rumored Wenders box set as well. Ahh..
I hope they do better than last year's announcements. I don't think they'll ever top November of 2011 - at least not for me. Last edited by SammyJankis; 08-12-2013 at 08:06 PM. |

![]() We'll have to agree to disagree about Oblivion, but I understand your point in general. I'm not going to bother with Elysium, since I found District 9 to be entirely too heavy-handed for my tastes. I'm finding a lot of sci-fi films to be heavy-handed in the same way lately. Oblivion is predictable, but it does at least bring some good old fun to the table again. |

I wouldn't be opposed to that either.

Wouldn't complain if The Vanishing was announced, but I don't think it's big enough of a title for November. |

Yeah, both Elysium and Oblivion were disappointing. The last great sci-fi movie I saw was Cloud Atlas.
