Dersu is still Kino as far as I know, wouldn't mind it getting a release anywhere at this point, the old DVD is awful in regards to sound a picture and non-anamorphic.
I've heard Dersu looks pretty bad, so at this point, it's "BluRay or bust" with me. Non-anamorphic/cropped DVDs are the definition of Evil.

I've said this in the past, but the same way people (mildly) went gaga over World on a Wire, they will over Stalker. Somebody should release it soon.

I don't comment in this thread often (ever?), but read regularly and enjoy everyone's thoughts. (The Great Owl, you have a way with words! )

One of the films I would most like to see on Criterion is Bertolucci's La Luna.

I've never seen La Luna but Jill Clayburgh was a wonderful actress so I'd be interested in it.

I would freak out if that happened!

Or maybe they could re-release that Kurosawa 25 set to Blu-Ray?

Yep! Have a copy sitting right next to me. It's great stuff. Offers a glimpse into the man's past, chapters that go into his early documentaries, and very thorough chapters that go into everything from The Decalogue and on. If you can snag it for that price, I'd highly recommend it.

I can't vouch for the book...but does this mean that you are going to (gasp) actually see Kieslowski's films not available on BluRay?

Thanks for the kind words. I just took a glance at La Luna on IMDB, and am intrigued. There are some great Bernardo Bertolucci titles out there that I'd like to see in the Collection.

I'm thinking way out of the box right now with respect to potential November announcement titles tomorrow, and I thought about how much I'd like to see Cornel Wilde's The Naked Prey upgraded to a Blu-ray title. I'm holding tight to my Criterion DVD edition of that movie, but it would be fun to see a Cornel Wilde box set, featuring...

Well, I certainly would like it to be. We shall see.

Oh yes, The Naked Prey is a good candidate for an HD upgrade for sure. That is one crazy movie!

I wish they'd give us some von Sternberg and Sirk on Blu Ray.

Touchez Pas Au Grisbi on Blu-ray would be most excellent.

Pépé Le Moko
on Blu-ray would be wonderful as well.

Of course, Le Trou on Blu-ray would rock out.

An upgrade of 3 Silent Classics would really be something The Docks of New York, especially, would look INCREDIBLE on BluRay.

EDIT: they should make it 3 Silent, 1 Sound with the inclusion of Shanghai Express. Soooo good.

I highly doubt we'll ever get a reissue of the 3 silent films. The original elements are not in that great of condition. But Morocco, Shanghai Express, and The Scarlet Empress would be high on my list.

My heart just sank

I'll take any of those three for sure.

The original negatives of The Life Aquatic were destroyed in a fire, the source material is lost forever, and the movie will never be available on Blu-ray.

(I'm joking, but curious to see the reactions.)

"One thing kids like is to be tricked. For instance, I was going to take my little nephew to Disneyland, but instead I drove him to an old burned-down warehouse. 'Oh no,' I said. 'Disneyland burned down.' He cried and cried, but I think that deep down, he thought it was a pretty good joke. I started to drive over to the real Disneyland, but it was getting late."
- Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey

EDIT: Actually, I think that Melville's studio really did catch fire once. I'd better refrain from joking like that lest karma catch up with me.

Plus, a Blu of the Von Sternberg silents would be a chance to add the Gaylord Carter theater organ scores for The Last Command and The Docks of New York that were on Paramount's laserdisc/VHS editions. The Robert Israel scores are fantastic, at least.
