Yeah it's pretty bad, and my screen is only 40" so I can just imagine how bad that scrubbing looks at even 10" larger, let alone a 100" screen. At 6 GBP or so thrown in an Amazon UK order with other titles, it was worth it for the rotten transfer and its (English-friendly) extras.

Certainly one of the worst transfers I have...probably the worst, really. But even comparing its screenshots to Le Samourai, it outclasses it fully.

maybe you will like the next month better. i didnt like the last month that much , but still im gonna probably give the movies a chance at hulu.

@ the people asking for horror movies. isnt "the uninvited" a horror movie?
i think there are already enough labels doing horror / cult horror movies / splatter and trash stuff every month.

Oh, it's locked in at Amazon France with the "Not Yet Shipped", but I would have followed through anyway, because I'm morbidly curious. It's not breaking the bank for me, although I could have scored a better Blu-ray presentation of a different movie for that money.

I own a few Blu-rays that are considered horrible by reviews here (Hitchcock's Family Plot, The Last Starfighter, Near Dark, etc.), but none of them are outright unwatchable.

I'm not expecting anything more than a placeholder.

Not to mention for a Brick and Mortar store like B&N it makes stocking so much easier. Instead of trying to decide if they want to stock 2 blu and 2 dvd of a Criterion title, or 3 blu and 1 dvd, they can just stock 4 and have their bases covered.

Criterion still maintains the rights to Le Samourai.

Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, and the other Melville titles that are on DVD are currently out of print, though.

I'm not sure what the licensing specifics are that led to this situation, though.

They don't, sadly. They're probably with Lionsgate

Sweet. The transfer can't be as bad as Footloose's can it?

I hope you enjoy it though.

Side note: I hope you know about the $5 off Amazon deal.

I think L'Eclisse, along with L'Avventura, is just a matter of time.

My favorite Antonioni. The whole thing's beautiful, but its final ~15 minutes are a stunning burst of pure cinema.

I'd like to see more back-catalog Claire Denis (I Can't Sleep and Trouble Every Day, anyone?) in the collection as well.

I'd also like to see some early Frederick Wiseman, although he controls his own rights and may not be interested in licensing. Equally important as the Maysles IMO, but lesser-known, partially due to limited availability of his catalog.
Ditto on all of that. Beau Travail is made for Blu, I can't believe it's not on the format yet.

Hopefully I do!

To me, it doesn't matter how many they release, it's what they release and whether it's something I want to own or not. If something I want to own is on Hulu Plus, I'll wait to get it on Blu-ray, or if I can't wait to see it, I'll watch it and get it later like what I did for Les Trois Couleurs, La Promesse and part of Purple Noon.

"Rhythm of the Night" will sound killer on a lossless track too.

Agnes Varda's Le Bonheur is also made for Blu-ray as far as it's cinematography goes. Yet the 4x Varda set that it's a part of hasn't been announced on Blu-ray yet.

They do?! Is there any proof?

It's strange that all Melville titles are expired except for Le Samourai. Hopefully they announce this in December or something! They did Alain Delon last December.

I sure hope so. But I doubt it on the fact that if you watch Hulu Plus, you can usually see what titles are being released next or at least considered. A lot of the recent announcements from May to November I wasn't surprised to see announced since the Hulu Plus icons for them had updated "release" artwork weeks before any announcements were made (I found it strange at the time).

L'Eclisse has the plain DVD artwork, so unless they update it soon, I don't think it will be released any time in the near future. Le Samourai isn't even available, so I don't think it will be released on Blu-ray in the U.S. at all at this point. I'm surprised that The Criterion Collection still has the rights to release it after they lost the rights to the other Melville titles- which did have Blu-ray releases, funny enough. So maybe they have a deal where they only have it in print a one year or two after it's released on Blu-ray, then the rights expire?

Yeah, it's probably not the visual standout from the set, but the one I want the most is Vagabond. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days afterwards.

Everybody else will go gaga over Cleo, and rightfully so. It's probably my favorite film from the French New Wave.

One of the reasons I haven't yet gone for the set.
