Whenever I purchase multiple Blu-rays in a short time or all at once, I follow these strict rules.
  • I pick the Blu-ray that I'm least enthused to see out of the whole bunch, and I watch it first.
  • I save the Blu-ray that I'm the most urgently enthused to see for last.

The first day, I watch the film that I'm least enthused to see. The next day, I watch the film that I'm least enthused to see out of the ones remaining. The next day, I do the same thing. And so on...

Now, I'm obviously eager to watch all of the Blu-rays, because I would not have purchased them in the first place if I were not eager to see them. Still, I'm always able to pick one out of the litter that I'm least enthused to see at that particular moment.

This is beneficial in two ways...
1. I never have anything sitting on the shelf unwatched for a long stretch of time.
2. I always end up having an invigorated appreciation for the films that I was initially least-enthused to see, because I watch them in such a way that I'm caught off guard when I was excited to see something else even more.

A couple months ago, I ended up receiving the Twilight Time title, The Driver, at the same time that I snatched up a bunch of Criterion movies from the big 50% off Barnes & Noble sale. I had been wanting to see The Driver for years, and it was tough to let it sit on the shelf while I went through other purchases first, but it paid off in spades.

No, Toho originally made a big show of giving their blessing to Emmerich/Devlin for the American Godzilla, back when....we all thought we were going to get a straightforward serious version. (Silly boy... )
They put a good face on what we got for about a year or two, but there were eventually hints that the real folks at Toho were not happy about being taken:
Quote:
General: "There have been increased monster attacks on the US east coast...."
Cadet 1: "The New York attack--That was Godzilla, right?"
Cadet 2: "THEIR scientists say so. Ours aren't so sure."
- GMK: All-Out Attack
(And you can tell I'd rather discuss Godzilla than Altman, it's just a good thing they're both on the Criterion catalog. )

I don't buy Blu Rays I'm not enthused to see, so I don't really come up against that problem. ;D

Your rules for watching Blu-Rays are extremely helpful, thank you so much!

On a Criterion note, I will be picking up the Three Colors Trilogy very soon; I can't wait to check them out this weekend!

I always draw up a big list of films from the decade I should see and end up watching hardly any of them, hence me missing out on the last few lists, I don't feel right making a top 20 when I've only seen 30-60 from each decade, I'll slowly change that over the next several years (it's been nice reading these polls so far for suggestions alone). I'm a lot more confident from the 60s onwards, I haven't seen enough Altman though so he'll inevitably go into my watchlist for the 70s poll.

One film I'd like to recommend for those compiling their 70s picks is Kim Ki-young's Woman of Fire, available free on YouTube from the Korean Film Archive.

. The print isn't in great condition and there are burned in French subtitles, but you can view it in HD and the English YouTube subtitles are great quality, YouTube also lets you change the font size and colour enough to cover up the burned in French subs. For me this is right up there with Fassbinder and Almodovar in terms of somewhat modern melodrama (Neo Melodrama?), despite print damage, the film bursts right out of the screen with glorious colours, scorching you with it's insane psychosexual nastiness.

Sometimes. In all honesty, though, I have a tendency of putting my clothes through the washer/dryer cycle, picking the clothes to wear out of the dryer each morning, and then knowing that it's laundry day again when the dryer is empty. The perils of being a single guy who lives in a man cave.

That's why I wrote the disclaimer in my post that I'm obviously enthused to see all of them if I purchased them in the first place. I can always pick one out of the bunch that I'm least enthused to see at a particular time, though. There are never any movies in my stack that I outright do not want to see. I want to watch them all.

Rewatched Rashomon yesterday. Excellent movie. Innovative storytelling, great lensing and a very powerful almost animal-like performance by my personal favorite Toshiro Mifune.

Gotta love the Simpsons joke about this movie:
Marge: "You liked Rashomon"
Homer: "That's not how I remember it"

Deep Discount is running a buy 2 get 1 free promotion on Blu-Rays. It includes some Criterion releases; sadly their prices are higher, about $32 per disc. Still, 3 for $64 isn't that bad of a price.

It's part of the DDD sale so maybe now is a good time to pick it up if you're worried. I went ahead and got Breathless off eBay last night, hope it's in the condition that it says it's in. Might get 400 blows later on today, but I'd really like a full Antoine Doinel blu-ray set.

i just ordered 400 blows for a fair price at ebay , just to be sure.

next thing would be breathless, should i add band of outsiders to that order, since it looks like studiocanal is into godard now?

Not bad, but you'll be guaranteed to get it cheaper in two months.
