Yeah, that's a hell of a streak.
I actually think Barry Lyndon is the second best of the group behind 2001.

Kore-eda has a delicate, subtle manner with even the heaviest of subject matter (death, child abandonment) and never teeters into melodrama. After Life, Nobody Knows and I Wish are wonderful films, the last being perhaps his most whimsical child-related tale.

Like Father, Like Son deals with a situation sure to bring a chill to any parent. Unlike Nobody Knows or I Wish, the focus is more on the parents' turmoil, though we empathize with the confusion behind the children's resilience. I have one minor quibble with a plot point, but it's a thought-provoking, heartbreaking, and uplifting work.
YES! I wholeheartedly agree. Kore-eda is one of my favorite directors ever and I'm that only one of his films is on Blu-ray in the U.S. (even though it's a great one). After Life, Nobody Knows and I Wish are the other three I've seen that I hope will be released eventually, as I love them dearly.

I really want to see Like Father, Like Son but there appears to be no home video release date. What is HIFF?

really good movie, but i fear i have to watch it again soon. i must have missed something, compared to solaris it didnt really feel complete to me.

If you're region free import Arrow's I Wish blu. Arrow have Like Father, Like Son planned for February next year.

I wonder if Criterion will announce more Kore-eda for Jan.

Barry Lyndon is a really good movie and I admit to only seeing it once but I consider the first three to be among the greatest films ever made so once you get to the fourth, it's kind of a letdown.

If we're just counting 4 films, you wouldn't need A Short Film About Killing/Love.

As a WWII/Holocaust history buff, would Shoah be a good blind-buy? I'm thining of picking it up during the sale (along with Devil's Backbone, Hunger, and For All Mankind).

I (obviously) don't feel as strongly about Barry Lyndon but I certainly can't argue with any of that. I've only watched it once so far and was very impressed.

Not as impressed as I am with the four Coppolas in question but still very impressed. And who knows what future viewings will bring.

(It took me thirty years to fully embrace Appocalypse Now...wow, maybe a little more than thi...I gotta stop this train of thought)

Hey, Gate

Yes, Hitchcock is the greater, more influential director (and I love most of his films, but it is actually DePalma who consistently engages my senses.

I'm not region free so I guess I'll be missing out on both films.

I think it is one viewing away from dethroning 2001 as my favorite Kubrick.

If anyone's on the fence about picking up Matt Zoller Seitz's The Wes Anderson Collection, I highly reccommend it. If you're a fan of Wes Anderson, the interviews and pictures in the book are beautiful and insightful. Wes Anderson is one of those directors that I like to keep a mythos around, but reading him candidly discuss the influences of his movies and seeing excellent behind-the-scenes photos (including a great view of The Life Aquatic's amazing cross-cut set of the boat, and some interesting discussions of how Hitchcock influenced his work) is very insightful into his filmmaking process, and makes it the best book about a filmmaker I've read so far.

If you're not a fan of his films, the book won't change your mind (and I don't think we can be friends), but if you are, I'd consider it a must-buy.

I've just ordered this from Amazon after seeing it in this thread. Have to hand in an idea for my final dissertation to complete my uni degree and strongly considering doing it on Wes' films, so this could be really useful!
