I am sure Mann was hands on as usual. And Tangerine Dream in lossless audio? Yes please.

Why do they look like G1 (DVD) size? I sincerely hope these come in blu-ray size cases.
Anyway, can someone shed some light on Thief? I'm only partially familiar with Mann's filmography (Collateral and Heat)

To celebrate, I'll pop in the Miami Vice soundtrack on my way home (it's the only Mann related music I have on me).

I can't tell you how much I will treasure the release. Mann-marathon at my Mann-cave!!! I just won't invite my brother because he thought Thief's soundtrack was so cheezy that it brought him out of the movie.

Noticed the aspect ratio on IAMMMMW is 2.35:1, while on the MGM Blu ray, it was 2.75:1. Wonder if Criterion will use another AR...

Great, great lineup today!!

Now the real question, which cut of Thief is it? Theatrical or the DVD re-cut/extended edition?

EDIT: I'm guessing it's the recut MGM edition, since it looks like they're porting over the same commentary.

I did not realize that Tangerine Dream did the soundtrack to Thief. Hell to the yeah.

So, I just got home a few minutes ago, found Laura and Sunset Boulevard in my mailbox, sat down at the computer with the commentary-in-graphics track on From Here to Eternity playing in the background, read this announcement for Rififi and Thief, and am planning to watch Stalag 17 later tonight.

Life is good.

There was some kind of interview, or info released when CC went all dual format on us. One question was posed regarding the size of the cases, and CC responded that the new dual format releases will be Blu ray size.

Some of these releases have more than 2 discs, so I'm wondering if this means they have a new type of packaging to accommodate the number of discs, or if we'll be seeing more digipacks in CC's future.

Well, its going to be extra amazing for me because I've never even see that film, Thief! I'm just going apeshit right now because I love his films and I can't wait to see this film for the first time in perfect HD.

Mann up folks! It's time!

Yup! That heist is one of the most beautiful things I have ever had the pleasure to witness. What a visually sophisticated debut is Thief!

As for the quality, it should be first rate. Criterion usually knocks it out of the park with their 4K releases (Following, anyone?).

I love the fact that two heist films are coming out in January.

Maybe a triple-feature night with Rififi, Le Cercle Rouge, and Thief.

I had Lips of Blood and The Shiver of the Vampire down in mine.

Yeah, this is a pretty good day.

All I need now is The Asphalt Jungle.

From Criterion's website official specs for IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD:

Quote:
Two Blu-rays and three DVDs, with all content available in both formats
3 DVDs. 3 DVDs taking space and adding weight.

I'm beginning to hate the new dual combo format...

I had the pleasure of seeing it on Showtime (I think) HD this last winter. Even with some of the compression artifacts, I was able to recognize the brilliance of Mann's visual sense.

Just trust me on this: you are going to be surprised at how assured the film is. It comes off as the work of a seasoned pro, not someone who had only made a TV movie prior. Thief comes with my highest recommendation!

I just noticed that all of the releases in January are Dual-format, so that means no Blu-ray-only releases (or blue stickers). No upgrades apparently (unless you count Throne of Blood and Rififi as upgrades?).

You guys should see my face right now, Thief from Criterion?

They have been released previously, so yes, they are upgrades.
