Yes! Good point. Well.. thanks for engaging me in this conversation. I learned a few things about the B&N sale that I did not know. It definitely isn't for me, but I can see how it does work for some.

I can see your point of view, but I had a different experience with it. Maybe because it was a recognizable piece of music as opposed to something scored for the film, it didn't stand out as much for me. I don't think of the music as being something that contrasts small scale or realism. Who knows?

It's just a bit out of place. I would be curious to read a defense because this minute issue is the only thing keeping it from cracking my top 20 of last year.

I feel so ashamed that I haven't listened to the commentary track. As a matter of fact, of the eight or so commentary tracks that I have listened to, none of them are from a Criterion release I need to amend this before I listen to Mann's commentary track for Thief this January.

Very good point.

From what I recall, Rosetta and La Promesse did not have score, so when I heard this piece I was jarred, doubly so when the piece is quite grandiose.

All that said, I don't want to hamper anyone's enjoyment of the film. Lord knows that I often love an abundance of melodramatic scoring in my movies.

Kndy, long time no see. A lot of junk shows up these days - not referring to yourself, of course.

Makin' friends, eh?

I watched Miami Vice. It was pretty for the most part, because that guy frames some nice shots. But outside of the craftsmanlike technique that I take for granted with some filmmakers, it didn't move me in any direction.

I haven't seen either Rosetta or La Promesse, so that might make a difference. They are definitely on my list to see soon...of course, so are about 500 other movies.

I forgot that someone in the forum already had a Bogart avatar when I changed mine last night. Apologies for the faux pas. It's like a chick wearing the same dress that her friend is planning to wear at a party. At least it's from a different film, though.

No worries. There is enough Bogie to go around

I revisited The Maltese Falcon last night via the commentary track. It's pretty amazing what they did for the high definition presentation of that one. Let's hope that The Big Sleep gets a similar treatment.

Here's to In a Lonely Place seeing the light of day on Blu-ray. Hopefully from Criterion.

Added to my list for B&N's November sale.

Just listened to it a few times to try and place it in the film. Isn't happening.

I had to invest in a new player this week(Multi-region chipped this time). So I'm going back over my Criterion collection just to make sure there's no issues.

I intend to re-watch Kid With a Bike tomorrow.

I still haven't upgraded my DVD of The Maltese Falcon. Someday...

If you haven't already, you should definitely read Dorothy Hughes' novel In a Lonely Place. It can help pass the time until we get a blu upgrade.

Since my Birthday was on Monday, I used some money to pick up some things at B & N (Since it's 30 % of all BDs and DVDs)
Family Guy: Seasons 1 and 2 (they're in 1 set)
To Kill A Mockingbird (I'll watch it when I'm done reading the book)
Seconds (Because everyone seems to like it on this thread)
Out of Our Heads; Rolling Stones (Cause I'm getting into the stones)
I also picked this up at Target, because it was too expensive at B&N
New; Paul McCartney (Comes with a bonus DVD)

It's used three times. two of which are pretty brief and separated by at least an hour. Third is when
[Show spoiler]Cyril rides off at the end.
It did seem a bit out of place though.
Still a great film. I love it when blind buys reward you with such goodness.

I saw a few more Criterions today at BBY than I usually do. I've seen Badlands there for a while, but today I noticed that they had Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums and Repo Man.

Thanks for the confirmation, Judex. It was a great blind but for me too. Of the Dardennes I have seen, Rosetta is by far my favorite, but I acknowledge that Kid with a Bike is probably the most accessible.

I'm glad all this conversation inspired you to revisit it. I love it when that happens.

According to this link, Fantastic Mr. Fox is an upcoming Criterion release. Now, it's just rumors until Criterion announces it themselves, but it does make it seem more likely.

Holy! I didn't know that.
