Well, they were "X" rated at the time, rather than "NC-17", but both Midnight Cowboy and A Clockwork Orange were nominated for Best Picture. And Midnight Cowboy won (A Clockwork Orange lost to The French Connection).

I totally missed that bit of info in looking at the supplements. Great news too! It's not considered a "great" Soderberg title, but it's an upgrade from the non-anamorphic release on DVD. Very cool to have that in HD too!

(1) It's not really a re-release. Criterion has announced that as the separate BDs and DVDs go out of stock, they'll release titles in dual-format. That's all this is. They're basically just keeping the film in print, but with the two formats combined.

(2) Given that, yes, it'll be a trend. It's going to happen with more and more titles as they go out of stock in the separate formats.

Check out this new PopMatters article that I just stumbled across.

12 No-Brainer Additions to the Criterion Collection

What do you people think?

I like the suggestion of Possession, although I think that Mondo will be releasing that one on these shores at some point.

Sátántangó
and True Stories are also keen suggestions.

I have "Fantastic Mr. Fox" but have not viewed it yet. I've pretty much concluded Wes Anderson is just not a writer/director that appeals to me. (Peter Greenaway is another.) I'm sure we all have directors that are just not for us.
I'm with you on Anderson. His first three films didn't work for me. The Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr. Fox were OK.

But I'm not with you on Peter Greenaway. I love his stuff, though I'll admit that his work can be an acquired taste.

So yeah, it disappoints me because Wes Anderson takes another slot that could have gone to someone else (a Kore-eda, or first-timers for Almodovar, Solondz, Tykwer. BTW, why is Sidney Lumet not represented in the Criterion collection? Is it because of which studios have the rights? I’m not knowledgeable on who won’t license to Criterion.)
I can't be sure without checking, but I think most of Lumet's films -- at least his classic films -- were released through Columbia. Generally speaking, through the DVD days and up to fairly recently on BD, Sony was reluctant to license anything out. In recent years, they've been licensing some of their Columbia catalog titles to Twilight Time, and Criterion has licensed at least one of them (On the Waterfront).

Since Sony just signed a major production, distribution, and accounting agreement with Criterion, it's hoped that more Columbia titles will come Criterion's way.

No. I call shenanigans. The Reflecting Skin was THE worst movie I have ever seen. It's like if in Fright Night, nobody gave a sh!t.

Why, yes. Yes, it is.

Why? It's never occurred to me that Criterion had any socio-political agenda in its choice of films to release. Their choices have been all over the map, from their debut in 1984 up through today.

I saw King of the Hill at the New Beverly over the summer on a double feature with sex, lies, and videotape. Crazy combo and they were both great. Definitely picking up King of the Hill and want to add more Hitchcock to my collection. I had Jules and Jim on DVD years ago.

I've seen every Wes Anderson movie but I've never finished Fantastic Mr. Fox. I'm a fan of Anderson but I really feel that Bottle Rocket and Rushmore are his best movies. I personally feel that Bottle Rocket is better than Darjeeling or Fox. Great performances.

satantango is the only one i'd like to see in the collection.

ecstatic about jules and jim! easily in my top 5 favorites of all time.. now if they'd finally put out andrei rublev, i think i would be content.

side note: was going to see blue is the warmest color tonight at the local cinema, but now that its getting criterion release, i'll probably just wait to watch it at home on the projector. no sense in dropping $ twice...

I'm not sure I'd agree that it's "just as good as" The Third Man, but yes, it's a hell of a film. Criterion released it on laserdisc back in the day, though I don't have a copy. I do, however, have the Image/Janus DVD.

Thanks for the info. My favorite that I'd really like is Prince of the City, but I guess that's out since it's Warner.

Does anyone know if there are special features on the current Fantastic Mr Fox that are not listed as being on the Criterion release?

I don't know why The Darjeeling Limited is hated. I loved the soundtrack, cinematography in India and the three actors played off each other pretty well. I liked how Frences was just like his mom when they finally showed her towards the end. A nuance you notice in life but rarely in film.

BTW, Bottle Rocket stands out so much compared to his other films.

Just a quick question. Is preordering these titles cheaper on release from the Criterion website or Amazon?

Some interesting suggestions. Oddly enough, of the entire bunch, True Stories seems to me to be the best fit into Criterion's wheelhouse.

The one that gets my juices going the most is The Begotten. I'd seen, and loved, Merhige's Shadow of the Vampire, and had seen tantalizing glimpses of The Begotten. I'm flabbergasted that I'd actually forgotten all about Merhige!

I wonder what a "New 2K digital restoration" means. Are they new scans or have they done the digital restoration on old masters made some time ago for DVD? The Hitchcock and Truffaut are "new 2K digital restorations." Are they scans of the negatives?

Tess is from a 4K scan. I'll check it out for the cinemaphotography.

Blue Is the Warmest Color is an unusual release. It could be that the first release is the theatrical release, then the special edition will be a director's cut, I suppose, so fans will have to buy both. But with seamless branching, two cuts could be accomodated on a single release without requiring space for two full cuts. The initial, rushed release may be a cash grab, to capitalize on the controversy surrounding the film.

Jules and Jim is an outstanding 1960s movie.

I was able to borrow the studio's releases of Fanstastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom. Both are amusing, with Moonrise Kingdom the better of the two, in my opinion. The only other Wes Anderson movie I've enjoyed is The Royal Tenenbaums.

I like your avatar. I'm hoping to have a chance to see Under the Skin soon. The trailer for that movie is ace. Looks like a solid sci-fi/neo noir offering.

The Criterion DVD of Jules and Jim got some good rotation under my roof. I am looking forward to see what they do with this film for a high definition transfer.
