Hard to believe Warner wouldn't release this themselves (though I'd kill for a Criterion edition of it).

I cant believe not ONE person thought to ask about the situation with La Dolce Vita.
If I was in that audience it would've been the first question asked!

While it's pretty rare for them to acquire rights if previously OOP titles, it has been done. I'm pretty sure Salo and 400 Blows were OOP before their Bluray releases.

They said that Rossellini's War Trilogy would be redone for blu-ray eventually. I believe they indicated the same time frame for Troell's Emigrants and New Land as well as (memories not clear) Here's Your Life.

The coolest thing I heard was the discovery of a bunch of boxes of film cannisters of Gance's Napoleon. Work is being done on the film elements...so if Criterion gets it it will be a while and the solution with how to do the triptich portions will be a challenge.

This is way interesting.
Actually, that was known for quite a while. Hell, I'd even mentioned it in a posting I made in this thread a few months ago. What I found more interesting during the panel was that Michael Bay is apparently a fan of Busby Berkeley. Who'd'a thunk?

I got the implication from the phrasing of that that eventually was code for "not on the agenda, but we'd like to get all our releases upgraded if possible" and not that it's actually been commissioned yet.

I'm on the campus and had no idea they were at the Wex! That's sucks.

More Cronenberg though!

There's two versions of Red River? That could be. Big Sleep, I know has two versions, that was just my guess, I had assumed Warner would release Sleep.

hmm, I got the opposite impression, that is 'definitely on the agenda'...the question was asked and he said Yes before digressing. I could be wrong though .

The way Becker was describing the difficulties of translating that type of widescreen image to a TV screen is essentially what I've been saying for years about the problems over the years that MGM/UA and Warner have had in their various releases of Brainstorm. No matter what you do, it's not really going to be the way the director originally intended it to be.

I just wish I could afford the plane ticket to England to see Napoleon on the big screen.

I love the mention of Coen Bros. and Zeitgeist and how Criterion can't get a hold of their films.
Actually, that was the Quay Brothers, not the Coen Brothers.

It's funny, because Becker mentioned that they'd done a Quay Brothers film on LD, but I don't know of a single one that they've done on LD or DVD.

I didn't catch which Hawks film they were talking about, only that it was one with "two versions". The only Hawks film I know of off hand with two versions is The Big Sleep. I can't imagine Warner not wanting to do that themselves.

According to Peter Bogdanovich, the shorter version is in fact the Director's Cut. Howard Hawks was unhappy with the pacing of the longer, 133 minute cut.
An alternate version, usually shown on television, substitutes spoken narration (by Walter Brennan) to the shots of the pages of a diary and is eight minutes shorter than the original.
The director's cut restores 8 minutes of footage normally cut from the tv version of the film (back to the original 133 minutes).
There you go. Hoping the image is better than MoC's, but will take it if best it can be.

Did they give an indication or hint of the time-frame for more Cronenberg?

He was probably referring to the Voyager release(s).

The Big Sleep is already scheduled to come out at the start of next year. I don't see any other company than Warner Bros. releasing it.

The Quay brothers, Akira, & Mr. Fox discussion also had Becker saying that they were in negotiations that could yield another animated title.

Well after reading the whole uproar over Frances Ha, I rented it last night and it certainly is a piece of crap film - Pro-B was way too generous with his review.

The only difference between Frances Ha and Lola Versus is that one is in color and the other in black and white but both similarly awful films.
