time to get one ! my second player is a Region A for criterions mainly and asia movies ... i think i could split my collection in half now (50% from the EU and 50% region A from the rest of the world)... but since im region free i spend WAY more on movies, but less on each individual release.

P.S. Pale Flower is awesome . I recommend that all collectors have a copy of that one.

probably one of my top favorite movies ever. if that one is a "noir" movie i liked it more than "touch of evil" and some other of the well known us movies of that time.

the opening and ending of pale flower is bayond awesome. and the girl..


just ordered ministry of fear and summer with monika from a ebay seller. same price as B&N 50% sale



not sure where to order throne of blood, import CDs has it currently for a OK price.. (~32$ incl shipping). next B&N 50% will probably be a while away...

Unrelated, but I just finished watching the StudioCanal Blu-ray of The Third Man, and I am immensely pleased. Had I not been aware of the existence of the out-of-print Criterion disc, I would have raved about this being one of the best things ever to happen to Blu-ray. Since I have owned the Criterion DVD since its release, I have double the extra features. A great, great movie.

Thanks for the info... I really want to pick up some of the MoC titles like Nosferatu, so looking for a player for them.

you could get a cheap region free player, there are a few around 90-125$ (just look in the player section of this forum) , or get a cheap region B player from a good brand (i would always prefer sony and panasonic over these cheap koreans...) and a power converter... thats acutally not that expensive at all. and works just fine.


im currently really happy with my

50€ (68$) sony S4100 region B player from amazon.de and my pana bdt 210 from amazon.com (that one was more expensive ~2years ago) probaly around 150$. but thats still 1/3 of the price of a region free oppo or still 1/2 of the price of a sony/pana region free player.

and if you look at most collections people have here (steelbooks, mediabooks, criterions....) a second low price player that costs roughly the money of 5-6 blurays should be no problem...

I've never come across criticisms of Kore-eda's films as "sentimental, cliche, manipulative", etc. Personally, I find them to be the opposite of all three and fail to see how someone could make such a statement but whatever.

I of course want to see Like Father, Like Son (I've watched Kore-eda's eight previous feature length fictional films). It appears to be headed for US theatres on January 17th according to IMDb so if I can catch it in the cinema, great! If not, a home video release better be in the works.

I always try to temper my praise (and criticism) so as not to seem prone to hyperbole but I really agree that Nobody Knows is indeed outstanding. Brilliant, even.

Whilst I have heard of his films I am yet to watch anything. I did try for LF, LS at TIFF this year but the schedule didn't work

After a quick look at iMDB, I am more drawn towards the children based films Nobody Knows & I Wish. Always interesting to see through the eyes of a child.

Big Benjamin Button fan here. I am not one to get overly emotional watching movies but that one gets me in a couple of places. Also, from a technical standpoint that disc is prime.

You are in for a treat with The Game..a wild roller coaster ride. Another technically superb disc as well.

I guess that permanently cements me in the minority. I ranted the other day, so no need to repeat, but seeing High and Low after Yojimbo - the lead role being one in which Toshiro Mifune seemed born to play, made Mifune in H & L look like Ben Affleck. For the suspense part (the 1st half of the film,) give me Hitch any day. For the 2nd half - the police procedural, I'm more of a fan of how Melville depicts the police.

Thank you Pro-B for that fantastic review! I can't think of another contemporary director whose films are as anticipating as his. I've never seen Thief yet, but this will be the greatest way to see it by far. I wish all of Michael Mann's films were distributed by Criterion (like Ingmar Bergman has pretty much every film in the Criterion Collection) but that is only in a perfect world.
