To keep this post Criterion-related, the last Criterion I watched was Frances Ha. I bought it as a blind buy, as the "free" BD (to my paid for BD) in B&N's last B1G1 sale a few weeks ago. I picked it because I was looking for something a little on the lighter side for a change. I was a little worried going in, that it might be a little too much of a chick-flick kind of movie. After seeing it, I'm still not sure (haha), but I thought it was good. I enjoyed it.

Great pick... Frances Ha is one of my favorite films of 2013.

That's pretty sweet. January 15 is payday, so I'm going to call the Barnes & Noble down the street on the 14th and reserve Rififi, Thief, and Throne of Blood.

I was planning all along on buying Rififi and Thief upon release, and then waiting for the next big sale to get Throne of Blood, but this works even better.

"but so what" You may enjoy paying more than others but I ain't too keen on the idea.

Are you getting a good deal right now? No. Again you may like not having everything available to you. If I want a "good deal" B&N outside of a sale open to everyone is not the place to be.

Thinking about all of this is getting me revved up to see Thief. There's a lot of fighting in the main thread about color schemes, tinting, and such, but I have no previous viewing experience by which to compare the presentation, and the screenshots look beautiful to me.

Why did almost all outdoor scenes in 'The Earrings of Madame De...' look like a painting? I don't think that was the intention of Max Ophüls.

I really liked this show, too. I get frustrated with what shows are so popular and others which barely get a chance. It always makes me wish I ran the networks and could keep all MY favorites!! (EZ Streets cancellation rankles me to this day.)

It is one of the best '90s films. At the time when it was made, it was also one of the most extravagant French productions. (But Binoche does not look lovely here, for obvious reasons). Superb Lavant. In my opinion, his performance in this film ranks him amongst the greatest living actors - and this isn't an exaggeration. I actually attended a press conference with Carax discussing the various obstacles during the production process and Lavan't performance. Everything is there to see.

But there is this one other scene in another film that has probably immortalized Lavant in Europe (see below).

Arrow released Lovers... many years ago on DVD. Hopefully, they will manage to bring it Blu-ray. The best label to tackle this film, however, is Criterion.
