I'm definitely looking forward to Riot.

But I was Scanners and The Brood!

And I'd love a blu-ray of The Virgin Spring.

I am not seeing any such crude reactions.

Bud Brad's point has a lot more credibility, really. While I wholeheartedly agree with you that no one should be targeted for expressing disappointment, many times I see one-liners that point precisely to the opposite scenario you describe.

I can understand if one is disappointed because one has seen all of the films in Criterion's latest announcement and has concluded that they are not worthy of being in the collection -- and I would be very interested to read why. But someone expressing disappointment because some specific favorite film was not announced in the latest batch does not make the batch 'disappointing'.

Criterion have been going strong for years and I am yet to see a month where their selections have been disappointing. And the reason why has nothing to do with one being a fanboy, or whatever other labels people like to use to describe those who appreciate their output. It has to do with the fact that their selection is consistently very eclectic, which means that there is always something special for someone.

So, Brad's comment was spot on

Can The 400 Blows be that much of an upgrade? It already looks pretty darn good to me

Agree with Brad and pro-b, but this month wasn't as bad as normal; didn't have to read "When is <insert one or more of Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Scanners + other early Cronenberg, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Life Aquatic> being announced?" a dozen times. I don't understand how people can be disappointed about films that they haven't seen being announced. Personally, I hadn't heard of Il Sorpasso or Riot, but I'm intrigued - that for me is the making of a successful month's announcements (though only 4 new announcements is a little slim). Breaking the Waves is also a great win as well.

It's a Dual Format re-release, not an upgrade.

Honestly, I am not trying to stir things up. Just making an observation and expressing my thoughts about it. My apologies smoss469 if you misunderstood what I was implying. It was not meant to criticize anyone person or group of people.

Not quite, but as far as I can see, this is a new extra. There may be another.

New digital transfer of Antoine and Colette (The Adventures of Antoine Doinel box set only)

Brad, this has come up many many times before and what you stated is 100% accurate. Frankly, if people are confused about what Criterion is trying to bring to the table, read this page below. It should help people understand they are about 'WORLD CINEMA' not just US...

That means that the short is only available in The Adventures of Antoine Doinel box set, which happens to be my #1 on my wish list of upgrades.

That was always there no? I googled it, and I found an article from 2008 with nearly identical wording:

Edit: Yep, there is nothing new, Cached page from just a few days ago:

No upgrade. They put the original blu-ray out of stock so they can eventually put out a dual format. This is just placing the dvd disc and blu-ray disc together and re-releasing it for those who haven't bought it already. Hopefully these don't take away release slots from other true "upgrades", if so, what a waste.

4 releases for this announcement, don't let the 400 Blows thing fool ya.

Most of the time I just let it go. But like clockwork every month we have the same chorus of songs and I just felt I had to put my 2 cents in. I'm not a confrontational person and rather not get in a heated discussion. Ultimately we are all on these boards because we love film and Blu-ray.

It's not on this site's review as being on there and my copy does not have it on the back of the cover, so I don't think it was. Other than that, there may be another new extra, haven't compared them all yet.

These are just dual-format re-releases. Criterion won't put anything new on them. The feature is actually not on this BD, or the last because as it says it's in the boxset only. They just use the general description for what's included with all the 400 Blows releases.

Now I am going to have to pop in my copy later tonight?? Weird that it would not be on this site's review, nor on the back of the cover of the original release...

I understand what you are saying, but it sounds like they are saying that it formerly was only in the box set, which it was, as it did not have a spine number as a short, but now is on this release, no?

I make it a point to try and see all of the films Criterion releases that I have not seen, but as of now this month there is only one sure buy and that is the wonderful Breaking the Waves. It contains, not only one of the best debut performances ever, but one of the greatest performances of all time (that I've seen).

I'm stoked about Il Sorpasso, one of my favorite Italian movies and hasn't been available in the US for a long time. Also for The 400 Blows, which I didn't get a chance to purchase once it went out of print!

Nothing has changed as far as I can see. It's still only in the boxset.
