Then, um, rent it?

(He probably doesn't get the royalty anyway, and you'll be one Rosemary/Chinatown viewing away from complete film ignorance?)

In one of the extras, the cynic's reason why much of "rural England" was filmed in France is mentioned, but then a valid reason for rural France is offered. I think you get the BFI extras, plus some filler ( )with the Criterion release.

I read the novel in High School, voluntarily, and think the movie is a good substitute for the novel, because the tedious description of some 19th century English novels is accomplished visually.

It's worth seeing. Tess' Dorset accent, however, isn't quite as good as the accent of the other members of her family.

I'm the proud owner of Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, and Chinatown. I will soon be the proud owner of Tess.

I prefer to appreciate works of cinema on their own terms without concerning myself with the tabloid peripherals. I don't have to condone Roman Polanski's personal lifestyle activities to enjoy films that he directed. The cook at the barbecue ribs restaurant on my street probably did some things in his personal, non-work-related life that I do not condone, but I still order the ribs, and the ribs still taste great.

Not to dredge all this back up but 'tabloid peripherals'?

Seriously?

I love the guy's movies and I'm generally pretty successful at putting his 'personal lifestyle activities' out of my mind while watching them but come on, very few people have this kind of skeleton in their personal, non-work related closets.

Just want to say - I adore Polanski and his films, he is a very talented director, I am so thankful he has made films, and despite the press and horrible things said about him, he continues to make great films, Carnage was hilarious.

I've only watched Carnage once so far but I was pretty disappointed.

It just seemed really flat and uninteresting. I love the entire cast but they all came across as kind of one-dimensional.

Maybe it will grow on me though.

His mother was killed in a concentration camp during WWII. He watched his father get hauled away and was lucky enough to get reunited with him after the war... Oh, and his wife was murdered by Charles Manson. I'm content to give him a pass.

Well it was adapted to film from a stage piece. I thought the cast was great and very funny, very dry humour though - guess its to for everyone

Since I was not a part of the police investigations and since I do not have the same information at hand that the authorities do, I don't have a problem referring to Polanski's personal wrongdoings as such in my above post. I'm not trying to make light of his wrongdoings, of course, but they have nothing to do with the movies that I enjoy watching.

Giving him a pass for drugging and ****ing a twelve year old girl is one thing.

Dismissing it as a personal peccadillo is another thing entirely.

As I said, I'm very willing to ignore the whole thing. I loved his movies long before I heard about the rape and I didn't want to stop loving his old movies or seeing his new ones. So I just shuffled the rape off to the side.

But I draw the line - oh so noble sort that I am - at pretending it didn't happen.

I'm not going to lie.. I had to look up 'peccadillo'

I (and many others, I'm sure) don't pretend that it didn't happen, but if you're also willing to ignore the whole thing, then what are you saying about the matter?

The real question is what am I saying about myself?

Answer: if there's something in it for me I'm willing to ignore (or in the case of something like Woody Allen remain willfully ignorant of) inconvenient things.

My particular brand of rationalization is along the lines of 'it was a long time ago and not buying his movies isn't going to change anything'.

I don't know if you are a Ravens fan living in DC, but what about Ray Lewis?

None of us are pretending that it did not happen, but the case has nothing to do with the movies that we enjoy watching. When I watch one of Polanski's films, I'm not "supporting" the wrongdoings in his personal life. I'm simply enjoying a product created by a team of filmmakers, a cast of actors, and a studio. The outcome of the case against him is beyond my sphere of control, and appreciating his professional work as cinematic art is a choice that is removed from the case itself.

Bottom line is most of you own a product produced, created etc by someone with a less than stellar past.

Walt Disney was a racist, sexist anti-Semite by all accounts yet I'm sure a lot of you own Disney movies.

Ford was another one who wasn't too fond of the Jewish people, and was someone so horrible in some ways that he was actually looked kindly upon by a man you might've heard of, Adolf Hitler yet many of you own a Ford, Lincoln, Mercury or any of the other brands now under the Ford umbrella.

The list goes on and on folks. It's possible to enjoy a finished product while still loathing the creator of said project. Debating it on such a small scale while focusing on 1 person in particular doesn't really gain any ground and just serves to derail the best thread on this entire forum (IMO).

That said, Criterion really needs to release some Woody Allen films.
