A fitting CC tribute to Resnais would be a release of Hiroshima mon amour and Night and Fog. |

EDIT: Also, worth noting that CC's The Leopard has an aspect ration of 2.20:1 whereas the new restoration blus are 2.55:1. Last edited by hustlermane; 03-02-2014 at 10:38 PM. |

But beyond that, it's not unreasonable to point out that there's less of a likelihood that Criterion will release a Warner-owned title than a title from Universal or Sony or whomever. Just as it's not unreasonable to respond that it's unlikely that they'll get the rights back to films owned by StudioCanal. Criterion can say that they have a "relationship" with Warner, but until we start seeing them release Warner catalog titles beyond the occasional exception like Badlands, I don't see why it's "inaccurate". As for Peter O'Toole, he lost to... Gregory Peck for To Kill a Mockingbird, and rightly so. Rex Harrison for My Fair Lady -- a toss-up, but not unfathomable. Cliff Robertson for Charly, and rightly so again. John Wayne for True Grit -- I would've given it to Dustin Hoffman for Midnight Cowboy Marlon Brando for The Godfather -- I would've given it to either Caine or Olivier for Sleuth Robert DeNiro for Raging Bull -- and rightly so. Ben Kingsley for Gandhi -- and rightly so. Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland. I can't comment on this as I haven't seen the film O'Toole was nominated for (Venus), nor any of the other nominees' films except Blood Diamond (Leonardo DiCaprio). |

Otherwise, it's really just a matter of keeping your ear to the ground and paying attention when people mention rights ownership. Like hearing that Ted Turner bought the pre-1986 MGM catalog from MGM/UA, and had also acquired the RKO catalog along the way, and these ended up with Warner Bros when Turner sold his holdings to Time-Warner. Quote:
![]() Of the US studios, Universal has traditionally been the most license-friendly. Also Buena Vista (Disney), though licensing from them is, I believe, mostly driven by the director (Wes Anderson, Kevin Smith, Michael Bay). Columbia/Sony had been license-friendly with Criterion back in the laserdisc days, but was less so when it came to DVD. They seem to be drifting back to being license-friendly again. Back in the laserdisc days, Criterion did a number of Warner, MGM, and RKO catalog titles, but that was back before Warner acquired all of those catalogs (it should be noted that Warner sold its library to MGM back in 1948, so MGM -- later MGM/UA -- owned the classic Warner films until Turner bought them and later resold them to Warner). Warner has had a general policy of not licensing any of their titles out to anyone, though they make an exception every now and then. |

0 issues here. Firefox is all I use and I've never had an issue with the CC site, even during the Flash Sale crashes.
