Janus now has the rights to the film, meaning Criterion is going to definitely be releasing it.

Anyone reckon I should just go for it?
King of the Hill is more contemporary. Tess is definitely what they used to call a costume drama. If it helps, King of the Hill also contains a copy of The Underneath, so it's like getting two movies for the price of one.

So I saw "The Grand Budapest Hotel" tonight.

Let me preface by saying I'm a now rehabilitated Wes Anderson hater. About 8-10 years ago, I saw both The Royal Tenenbaums and Life Aquatic. I hated them at the time, as I didn't "get" the content, but I've since come to realize that one's taste in film is refined and sharpened over the course of their life. I used to bash Wes Anderson, but after my experience with "Grand Budapest" tonight, I can do that no longer.

I was drawn in by the trailer, and went into the film fully aware of the caveat that my previous experiences with Anderson were negative. Well this one blew me away. The dialogue, the characters, the subtle humor, the eye popping colors, the historical aspect, and the ridiculous plot were all intriguing this time around, which means I will soon need to revisit Tenenbaums and his other works.

I just recently watched all my Hitchcock's that I purchased and had never seen, as well as stuff like Twelve O'Clock High, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Maltese Falcon, An Affair to Remember, and many more, and loved them all. Now to get to my point...I'm ready to blind buy yet again, but I need feedback on some of these since I know little of them. What I'm looking at are;

Tokyo Story
Breathless
Rififi
8 1/2
La Haine
and 2 non Criterion...
How Green Was My Valley
The Best Years of Our Lives

Any feedback would be appreciated my friends!
I blind bought The Best Years of Our Lives when it was released. It is, without a doubt, one of the greatest movies I have ever seen.

There is a film thread about it in the forum. I and others have posted there.

Just finished watching Jules and Jim and absolutely loved it, very glad i blind bought it, recently i was a little afraid that i would regret my purchase after seeing some opinions here but it was exactly what i expected.

I understand some people opinions that they don't sympathize with Catherine but i don't see how it affects the movie, even if we want Jules & Jim to get away from her, the way the movie presents their story never feels false.
[Show spoiler]Well now that i think about it, maybe the part when she pulls a gun is a little over the top, specially since Jim agrees to see her again later, but i am not completely sure it was supposed to be real, since i believe there is some kind of dreamy effect on the picture on that scene

Also the presentation is gorgeous, specially the audio sounds very clear with, i haven't seen a better PQ and SQ in a film of this age, can't wait to see all the supplements.

That actually doesn't sound like a Criterion release, since Criterion doesn't do limited editions. My best guess is that a limited edition will be released in some special way, and then Criterion will release a standard edition of it.

Here's an easy answer: the New Musical Express (NME) is a British magazine. That article is referring to a local - British - DVD/Blu release. They would not be reporting on a US release. Criterion MIGHT release it at the same time (which would make sense, given when the 50th anniversary actually is) but before everyone starts overanalysing the 'limited edition' stuff, I will reiterate: that link is for the online version of a BRITISH magazine.

I think its safe to say its coming from Criterion this year. I don't think its safe to pick a date yet.

I came across an interesting alternate perspective of The Great Beauty via film critic MaryAnn Johanson:

Quote:
I was already on edge before last night’s Oscars, when a recent viewing of The Great Beauty, nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, infuriated me with its pretentious bullshit. Pretentious bullshit is always bad enough, but this pretentious bullshit presumes that the viewer will be able to identify with — even if it’s to ultimately reject him — an old rich white man who’s jaded and bored with his decadent lifestyle, including nonstop partying (after which he goes home to his female housekeeper, who feeds him and makes sure he wakes up in time to get to his next party), attending strip clubs and discussing a performing woman like she’s livestock, and sleeping with more than one much younger woman.

And then The Great Beauty won that Oscar.
For context, this is part of her article I am officially tired of being asked to sympathize with men in movies.

I haven't seen Great Beauty, but for someone who rails against pretentious bullcrap, her reviews are pretty pretentious...

Attacking her reviews doesn't negate the point she was making.

I totally agree we should have more films with female leads, but is seems totally random to pick on The Great Beauty for not having a female lead.

I also don't think the film asks you to identify with the main character.

I think she chose to pick on The Great Beauty because that article was written the day after the Oscars.

I avoid reading big reviews, seems most reviewers try and cause controversy or hate a film just to get attention - so frustrating.

Even if I hate a film, I can still find something to appreciate.

As much as film critics often annoy me, I seriously doubt this is the case.

Except when it's Armond White.

I just watched Stalker for the first time last night, and it was my first film that I have seen from Tarkovsky.

WOW! WOW! WOW!

Stalker needs a Blu-ray release ASAP, because the cinematography blew me away. The story was beautiful, following these characters as they discovered their own flaws. I loved every slow and wonderful moment of it.

It's a 5/5 from me. So, what should be my next film from Tarkovsky?

PS: I would love to see Stalker being released by Criterion.
