Should be receiving Hausu tomorrow, I really gotta praise Newbury Comics for such a speedy delivery. I have ordered blu-rays from them via Amazon in the past and received them days before expected.

I went out of my way to keep my User Review of Il Sorpasso spoiler-free when I wrote it a few days ago. There is an element of sadness in the film, but the story left me more exhilarated than anything else.

I cannot recommend Il Sorpasso enough. The movie engaged me right from the first scene, and it never let up.

Debating whether to get myself now, I'm intrigued - thought it was a comedy though lol

Speaking of fat Welles, you could always go with the below image for an avatar, since the new Universal Blu-ray of Touch of Evil is so marvelous. Seeing the movie with the proper black levels on a transfer really makes a difference.

Oh, Scarlett, when will you finally leave me? Will I see you under the skin or will you be lost in translation? HER personality is like the ultimate match point for every horse whisperer I know.

Welles, you are long gone, unlike Don Jon.

It will be a while until I can change this avatar. Esp. since I used Adobe Photoshop to enhance the avatar (boosting contrast/brightness).

If James Cameron were here, he'd be proud of my Avatar.

Even if I don't get it and have to pay full price - after paying £117 for one film, paying £120 for 27(?) discs is very appealing lol
What have you done with your fake copy of Revanche ? Have you complained to wherever you bought it ?

One of my top Westerns so this will be one of my rare day 1 Criterions. I've only seen the longer version in all my years of watching this film so seeing the one with Brennan's narration will be a nice bonus.

Yes, we should be expecting one. Whether we'll actually get one is anyone's guess at the moment, but there's no reason for us not to expect one.

I just finished George Washington.

I thought it was a good coming-of-age type story and it opened me up to an entirely new side of David Gordon Green that is not Pineapple Express or The Sitter.

The first act was perfect and the second act was a good follow-up to the first, in my opinion. I did find the third act to be a bit of step down, but I think that the last few minutes concluded the film nicely.

Billy Wilder's 1951 film noir, Ace in the Hole, is one of the most scathingly cynical movies ever made, but its economical storytelling and snappy dialogue give it a captivating edge that keeps us fascinated with some of the least likable characters that we will ever meet. Kirk Douglas, in one of his most cocksure and audacious roles, plays a hard-drinking down-on-his-luck news reporter who senses a chance to resurrect his career by exploiting the plight of a man trapped by a cave collapse in an abandoned silver mine. The ensuing media circus serves as a palette for Wilder to showcase the dark side of ambition and opportunism, and he does not let anyone off the hook. Unethical journalists, corrupt elected officials, and salivating onlookers are all presented for the viewer's scrutiny. Even the hapless trapped man has landed in his predicament by looting a sacred Indian burial ground.

Kirk Douglas, who excelled at playing mercilessly icy characters in film noirs like Out of the Past and Champion, is at his savage best here in a role that simultaneously appalls us and demands our uncanny admiration. Jan Sterling, whose unique brand of trashy allure benefited noirs like Mystery Street, Union Station, and Appointment with Danger, plays an unrelentingly sleazy character whose unapologetic avarice matches Douglas's Chuck Tatum step for step.

Ace in the Hole may not lead us into the shadowy cityscapes and smoke-filled bars that define many film noirs, but its wide open spaces under a blazing sun manage to bury us just as deep in the gritty desolation of human weaknesses. Its acerbic criticism of sensationalist 1950s culture has unfortunately proved to be an accurate reflection of our current times as well.

This Criterion Blu-ray improves on its standard definition predecessor with a filmic presentation that delivers impressive detail and sound. A commentary by Wilder historian Neil Sinyard goes into play-by-play mode frequently, but also excels at explaining the symbolism of certain sequences. An afterword by director Spike Lee is a pleasingly reverential testament of the film's legacy. A 1980 documentary on Billy Wilder is an informative viewing, as are the interviews with Wilder, Kirk Douglas, and Walter Newman. Finally, the newspaper format Criterion booklet is an excellent touch.

I have not yet seen George Washington, but I loved All the Real Girls. Can't wait to catch Joe, as well.
