The funny part is, I very strongly suspect that just about every single person who has mocked the idea of being nudged away from a purchase by supposedly trivial things like cover art or packaging or slipcovers or steelbooks or booklets or the like have themselves been nudged toward a purchase by one or more of those very things.

Silly humans...
Yeah, silly humans who would buy a film based on a cover alone or a booklet

The FILM is the most important factor but the extras are important and this cover has thrown the film off my "will 100% buy" list.

Agree / disagree it really does not matter

I'm not saying that you need to love the artwork, but if there's a film that you love and want to own, to NOT buy it because you don't like the cover seems utterly ludicrous to me. Obviously to each their own...

I haven't seen Killers Kiss in a number of years. May have to revisit it again soon though. That was an unexpected/nice surprise of Criterion to make it as a special feature.
Speaking of which, it's a shame that Criterion chose not to put out Jean-Pierre Melville's Le doulos and Le deuxieme soufflé. I think this was around the time when Criterion hadn't completely moved over to blu-ray. As I recall certain titles would only come out on dvd and others would come out on both.

Ok, why buy a Criterion and not the standard Studio release ?

I didn't know there even was one? Regardless, I'm almost certain the image quality will be better on the Criterion, plus the extras if you're into that sort of thing.

My Criterion Priorities:

1. A movie I like, or probably will like
2. Good transfer
3. Good extras
4. Packaging

I've never had packaging prevent me from buying a Criterion release, but I guess some here just have a different set of priorities.

For the wonderful PQ and audio transfer and of course the special features. These all come first to me. Don't get me wrong, the artwork can also be a big selling factor for me. But if I love the movie and and the likely hood of Criterion putting out another version of it with different artwork is extremely low, I would just jump on it!

I know people who buy Criterion just for their artworks in the packages - the artwork are down by brilliant designers and people and they do deserve recognition for their hard work - plus you can't get most the artwork anywhere else as its exclusive to Criterion.

Yes the films are important, but so is the artwork which a designer has put so much hard work into creating.

Also if I'm buying the best version of something, I expect the ENTIRE package to be 100% the best it can be, especially when paying a large amount. That is something Criterion tries to do, so it is disappointing when they let something slip, be it, artwork, picture quality, sound quality, special features etc etc

Also, something else about Criterions vs. standard releases. The resale value is much higher for Criterions if you want to sell it someday. It's a better investment overall.

Wow, you buy blu-rays based on artwork and not the movies themselves? Do you also skip movies at the theater that have bad poster art?

They are entitled to begin put off buying a film if they don't like the artwork.

One reason people buy Criterions is because they are collectible and amazing to have on shelf and to admire, if the artwork is pretty weak and poor it can put people off having it as the packaging isn't as easy to admire - plus they may have another copy of the film.

Don't judge people - we all like different things and do things differently.

I don't either. It's probably one of my favorite covers ever released by any studio.

It doesn't look finished, the design they have used is a really quick trick which looks nice when used right,t his isn't used well.

The typography on the newest is awful especially compared to original one I posted and tt just looks incredibly rushed and a tad generic, doesn't feel finalised or up to the Criterion standards.

It just needs to be pushed more design wise, its a good start but needs a lot more work to look finalised... I think removing he car image thats overlaid on top would improve it A LOT, just looks like something done at University level design lol

Also - look at the designers other work - its SO much better and more professional looking.

I buy based on a film, that said I expect everything that comes with a Criterion to be the best, not have a garbage cover as is the case here. To your other question, no, as I don't need to look at a theatre poster every time I look at my Criterion shelf

Sure they are entitled… but the artwork doesn't change the movie inside. Like I said, does this person not go to the theater based on the movie poster? Because to me, opinion should at least be based on the trailer, since a motion picture is moving images, not still ones. And since there are previous posters all over the Internet for this film, it seems that if he is just buying it for the art and not the content, he might as well just buy a poster.

As with everything on this thread, some think their opinion carries more weight than others.
