How can anyone hate this release - the packaging is incredible! Can't wait to dive in and start the samurai genre!

Excited!!

Can understand why people are annoyed by the size and stuff but I love it and this is one of those releases that you can buy just for artwork in book and on casing lol
I have no plans to purchase a plastic case for the set. I like the book packaging.

Just bought Revanche on Amazon, pairing it with Hodges' Get Carter to hit $35 for free shipping. It's a blind buy, which I do often with Criterions. I've been eyeing it for a while, as it sounds interesting and others here have commented strongly about it. I had been planning on waiting until the B&N sale, but I already have a long list of Criterions already in place to purchase during that sale, so I figured why not. Looking forward to it arriving!

Killer's Kiss was a surprise. Check it out if you haven't yet. Octagon nailed it with his assessment.

I personally feel that the film is rather unique so it's only fitting that Criterion uses a rather unique cover. The cover perfectly blends all of the key aspects of the film, such as the characters, the beach, and the road.

I really like the look on Maribel Verdu's face, as well as the positions that the characters are turned in, as if they are gazing upon and reflecting upon the grandiose mystery that is life.
your response for why you like it is fair enough, but I would love to hear what the artist says about why and how the image is tied to the movie. maybe many other Criterion titles have the same situation, but the two characters being out of focus and not facing forward is an attempt at some kind of artistic statement. being that everyone gets up in arms about correct aspect ratios, director approved transfers, etc, then it would seem to me that this cover art should make many people feel disappointed - regardless of the artists's interpretation, it is a subjective one that would be provided for an aesthetically unpleasing piece of art that was not provided by anyone tied to the making of the film. it sucks.. immensely. I like the original poster much better.

and the horse was beat to death over the weekend, but since I just read it now... Clare - most definitely on your side in the matter. classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. Octagon (again, that Octagon! ) supported your side with some articulate words.

Poor horse

On a more serious note it shows that Criterion is more than the film and for some everything else that comes with it are important, maybe equally so, to the film.

One thing for sure, unless I am completely satisfied with something, I will stop, put it back on the shelf so to speak and walk away. Some people may not even look at the cover but I do.

Anyway, each to their own, as a good buddy of mine says. We are all a little strange here anyway

I was debating before I had ordered - but after receiving.. NOOOOO I want an excuse to touch and explore it haha!

My bookcase is deep so it first perfectly, but cause its longer than normal cases so I just slide them forward as you don't see gap behind them - then they are flush

Its so beautiful lol >.< I hope the films are good, don't know much about them but they seem interesting and like the idea of them using same character for all films and such - cinematography looks interesting too...

But yeah I can see why others may hate it or find it awkward but nook its amazing haha - and for the price its incredible!

I don't remember who to thank.... (might have been Pro-B,) but someone gave this film a shout out a little while back.

I was excited to see that it is streaming on Netflix and had a chance to see it this past weekend. really enjoyed it!

Russian film from 2003 that won quite a few awards on the film festival circuit. highly recommended!

If this is a "Director Approved Edition", does that mean that Cuaron chose and/or approved the cover art? Would you feel any better if the person who made the film approved of the cover?

Andrey Zvyagintsev is a great director
I really liked Elena (2012)
His new film Leviafan is now running in Cannes, it sounds interesting:

"A present day social drama spanning multiple characters about the human insecurity in a "new country" which gradually unwinds to a mythological scale concerning the human condition on earth entirely."

Yes, I would. That is my point entirely. If it had Cuarón's approval, which I would understand to mean that he feels the artwork melds with the themes and ideas of the film, then yes, I'd feel better. But it would still be ugly.

awesome! I have Elena in my mental cue and did not realize that it is the same director. I'll bump it up a few places in the cue and see it soon!

It might have been me, because I've pitched The Return several times on this forum. I saw it at the theater back in 2003, and then bought the Kino DVD as soon as it was released.

I keep hoping that Kino will upgrade The Return to Blu-ray. It would be so good to see in high definition, because it's a splendidly beautiful film.

Sadly, Vladimir Garin, who played the older brother in the film, drowned shortly after the filming was finished, after his friends dared him to jump from a tower into the lake where the beginning scene was shot.

figures that it was you, Owl.. the Netflix stream is in HD. I have good luck with a nice stream quality on our family room TV set.

I read about Vlad Garin this morning. what a sad cruel irony. reminds me of the star of Criterion film Lacombe Lucien who died in a car accident not long after that film's release.

Seller on Amazon made mistake on pricing - and I got lucky haha

Would be nice if Criterion released more box sets in this style - but only huge releases not for like 5 movie box sets etc

My Antonioni collection so far consists of...

La Notte
Red Desert
Identification of a Woman

I used to have the Criterion DVD of L'Avventura, but I sold it a year ago in anticipation of the inevitable Blu-ray.

I need to branch out more, but I've simply been happy to buy the Criterion releases of the Antonioni films as they come down the pipes.

The 1980s synth-pop soundtrack of Identification of a Woman is perfect, just perfect.
Are the ones you own/have owned the only ones you've seen? Even though you've knocked out my favorites with those, there is still a lot to look forward to.

As for me, I think I will keep in the spirit of Antonioni today with Il grido and/or Zabriskie Point.
