And for anyone who is wondering why I hated it, the character of Andre is the most boring, "Searching for meaning" character I've ever seen. I imagine him as the type of character that thinks everything has a deeper meaning and nothing can be taken at face value. If there were an art gallery opening, he would be there to lecture the first time goers about how you have to look beyond the strokes that were painted into the strokes that weren't painted; and how the use of light colors shows the artists inner melon-collie etc. IE you'd smack him if you were there.
I think I made it half an hour, maybe, before I shut it off, which is not something I will commonly do.

I'd have no problem with Criterion releasing the occasionally DVD-only set if it meant more of the Eclipse/miniseries type thing came out. But when you think of the more inspired intra-medium Criterion choices like Fishing With John, Beastie Boys anthology or even Golden Age of TV set, I can't see those type of things getting released anymore. And something like Rivette's Out 1 seemed to be much more of a possibility a few years ago than it does now, at least from the CC.

But don't get me wrong, I love Criterion's recent output as much as the next person here. Going off Pro-B's review, their release of ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS (which I was thinking yesterday, may be the greatest American film ever made in my mind) could very well end up being the best release of the year.
Absolutely. It's why I'm especially thankful for a label like Masters of Cinema, though. While Godard is a Criterion favorite, I could never see them releasing Une femme mariée on blu-ray. Same goes for the early Antonioni and Imamura films. I would also be on board with some DVD only releases, I do still buy DVDs, though I'm not willing to spend nearly as much as I will on a blu-ray release. Criterion does still surprise me from time to time, Judex being one release, Master of the House another recent example, but their sense of adventure seems toned down.

Im hoping we get the same treat as last year with 4 months 4 boxsets. November is definitely the big one, but September gave us Rossellini last year so maybe Tati this? Also has Cassavettes, Zatoichi and WCF. If they set the precedent last year, we are in for a solid 4 months.

I think My Dinner With Andre is excellent.

I will admit that it gets a bit heavy and difficult to stay focused, but it is incredibly deep. I would love to see it on Blu-ray.

Completely off base here and just randomly wishing out loud. But how awesome would it be if one of the box sets this fall was the unaltered star wars OT? Now that Disney has distribution it's not impossible that it will get a release some day. Not that I think there is ever going to be even a sliver of a chance this would land on criterion.

That would be so huge for the label and would probably be the best selling Criterion in history.

Criterion releasing unaltered Star Wars?
Well, as much as I'd LOVE that and it would be a dream come true, I think there's more chances of Criterion releasing a Jean Claude van Damme movie..

Uh, you do know they're real people, right?
(Whether it's real dialogue is artistic license, but then, so is most celeb-reality TV.)

And Wally, of course, doesn't search for meaning. He takes things at face value, is amazed by all of Andre's travel stories, but doesn't see why meaning has to be "searched" for. ("I could never understand why people think they have to go to the top of Mount Everest to see 'truth', it don't know what makes Mount Everest more 'real' than the newsstand on the corner.")
And that's why it's, like, a conversation.

And keep in mind, before he first uttered "Incontheivable!", Wallace Shawn was respected off-Broadway actor and playwright, and this was the movie that singlehandedly made him a star.
Check out Malle's "sequel", Vanya on 42nd Street, where we see Gregory and Shawn (and an all-star cast) at work in their day jobs in a Chekov rehearsal.

(Gregory was a bit of a mad actor as well as "mad" director, too, for those who've seen The Shadow, The Mosquito Coast, or the '83 PBS Alice in Wonderland.)

I haven't seen My Dinner with Andre, but I LOVE Vanya. It was a really pleasant surprise as I blind bought it on a whim.

There's probably not a sliver of a chance, as you said, but it's fun to enjoy the thought for a short while. I'd love to have the initial theatrical releases of the original trilogy.

I had fun going through all six films on the Star Wars: The Complete Saga last year after I bought the Blu-ray set, and I do not get as riled up about what basically amounts to less than a total of ten minutes of changes over all three movies as many people do, but there's no substitute for the movies in their original form.

Where did you order Picnic at Hanging Rock to get it so early? There are some upcoming Criterion releases I'd love to receive a week or more before the street date! The Essential Jacques Demy, please! Do people know of sellers that routinely ship pre-orders early?

I've been meaning to check it out for a while now, so I'll probably watch it now this week.

Wallace Shawn has gone on record starring they are playing themselves, IE acting, not a true documentary. So it's not just them being themselves.

Really want some more Lars Von Trier or Malick added to collection... oh and Lynch.

Bit depressing the day I look forward to most in 15th of every month lol XD

Also - How safe is it selling Criterions on here? I want to start selling my DVD's as I have most of them on Blu now so seems a waste :/ - I'd sell on Ebay but you end up paying so much towards Ebay :/

Here's my "Hit List" for the upcoming B&N sale.

These were already ordered, or will be by tomorrow, using the $8 coupon codes for B&N.com, totaling $15.99/piece:

All that Heaven Allows
Overlord
The Hidden Fortress
Ace in the Hole

For the July B&N sale:

Picnic at Hanging Rock (the packaging with the novel looks phenomenal)
Judex (haven't seen this, but I'm intrigued)
Insomnia
Persona
L'Eclisse (maybe)
Red River (maybe, the packaging is way too large for my tastes)

And while I like these titles below, I don't think they are "buy" worthy for me:

A Hard Day's Night
Pickpocket
Scanners
