Bergman is the greatest director that ever lived:

1. Persona
2. Fanny and Alexander
3. Seventh Seal

Seriously though, buy everything he ever did.

These get my vote too. All 3 come with excellent documentaries. I thought about The Magician, Wild Strawberries, and Autumn Sonata as well, but the 3 mentioned previously have the best overall packages.

I wish Criterion released a complete Bergman boxset like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Bergman-.../dp/B000HN32H8

When it was available it was £600 lol - but a Criterion verson would be amazing, like Zatoichi or AK 100

Yep, that is pretty much the Bergman starter pack.

Up to now, every response has included both The Seventh Seal and Fanny and Alexander. And you had to go and screw that up!

I'll even that out and only say Fanny and Alexander.

I haven't seen that many of his films but Fanny and Alexander is the only one I've really enjoyed. Hour of the Wolf and The Magician were kind of close too but for the most part Bergman feels like a chore to me.

I agree, I know it seems to go against the grain here but I really was not a fan of the Seventh Seal. I got it, I liked what he did, but it is not something I would watch again or recommend to anyone.

If its only blu ray, these are the best packages to me:

1. Persona (bonus features are outstanding and lengthy)
2. Autumn Sonata (the documentary on here is priceless; you're a fly on the wall as he makes this film)
3. Wild Strawberries or The Seventh Seal (both of these have 90 min docs on them)

The Magician and Fanny & Alexander I wouldn't recommend if you're not familiar with his work and would save those for later on. Add to that the Summer films. Fanny & Alexander has a wealth of bonus stuff and is a great release. To me, their best Bergman release is still the film trilogy DVD. If they upgrade those and add in some more film-specific supplements it would be one of their finest blu ray sets.

Default Jubilee?

Has anyone here seen Jubilee? Just was on the official CC site and was reading someone's list of punk criterion releases and one I hadn't seen on the list was that one. Let me know your thoughts thanks!

Which includes The Magic Flute, which now seems to be doomed to remain on DVD (TV source?)

Sorry. Monika is my favorite Bergman. Maybe because it was the first of his that I saw. Another that I really like is Dreams aka Journey Into Autumn which allows Monika star Harriet Andersson a chance to be glamorous although she still plays an immature girl ala Monika. I have no idea if it was ever a dvd release since my copy of it was VHS.

I think I've hit my first serious crossroad in what to pick up next. Can anyone recommend any films that aren't in my wish list to check out?

I noticed they just put Fox & His Friends up on Hulu. Hopefully this means a blu ray is somewhere on the horizon.

Yes, The Magic Flute was originally shot for Swedish television, but it was shot on film, so there's no reason why it couldn't be mastered in HD and released on Blu-ray.
