wasnt this one getting a bluray upgrade in germany along with caligari? wouldnt that make a criterion upgrade more than likely?

i went for the AE release. it was about half the price of the criterion release.
well, yes, I don't expect an action movie sound design, but I would expect for the music score to be heard from the rear speakers too, thus making it sound greater..
Since you have the AE is that so?

not that much.. but the review alreadys says so

Now, unlike the Criterion release the Artificial Eye release has DTS-HD Master Audio 5.0 tracks that handle the Pro-Logic surround material. I personally do not find the surrounds to be overly effective, but the fact remains that this is the more flexible option for a number of people who bistream and have experienced some issues with the Criterion Blu-ray box set.

...Well, um, good thing it probably ISN'T then, is it?

I saw All is Lost last night and loved it. We need more Robert Redford in the Criterion Collection.

Are there any other films in the collection with him aside from Downhill Racer?

Funny, I was just about to respond with "Are there even any Redford films (as either actor or director) in the Collection?" I forgot about Downhill Racer. At any rate, I don't think there are any others.

I think Criterion should license Captain America: The Winter Soldier from Disney.

Wow, seriously, I can see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid being in the collection. (the 2008 Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox is godawful in terms of video and audio quality!)

With a filmmaker as important as Robert Redford, who helped steer independent cinema in the late 1960s, he should be celebrated more and there should be some sort of Redford box set in the collection! He's such a dynamic actor and multifaceted and mature filmmaker. Heck, even Rex Reed, the film critic, loves him.

The Horse Whisperer would be the obvious choice. Or indecent proposal.

Well, if it helps, you can imagine that Westerns are similar to post-apocalyptic stories, like zombie films. Both centre around surviving in a world where there is no law and order, no society, and no morals. Maybe with this in mind you might like them a little more .

If the protagonist is a sheriff or a marshal, you can even think of them as police procedurals.

Nashville is brilliant but not for everyone. It's a movie that definitely improves with age and viewings. Give it some time.

All Is Lost was my favorite film of 2013. It's spectacular.

I've got Three Days of the Condor (excellent film!) and All the President's Men on Blu-ray. Sadly, Downhill Racer is the only Criterion release starring Redford, to the best of my knowledge.

I'll be buying Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I only have three of the Marvel films, because most of them don't get through to me, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier is my favorite Marvel film to date by a long mile.

Ordinary People is surely an inevitability assuming Paramount doesn't want to keep it to themselves?

On the subject of Westerns, for a long time I was not a fan, and really had no desire to watch any western. But then after college, I took a literature in film class because a friend was teaching the course. In that class we watched The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Fort Apache. Those 2 films changed my whoe perspective on Westerns.

Most recently I watched the Dollars Trilogy and just marveled at how great these any of the Western genre can be. Other favorites are Stagecoach, The Searchers, and Unforgiven. I've gotten a lot of suggestions here for others, but there are just so many. One day I'll catch up.

I've often considered using the below image from the movie as an avatar...

I thought the same thing regarding the visual effects. I was really blown away by how well some of the effects have held up, and amazed of how much they could do with what they had. The transparent figures are just a feat of amazement for me.

That is an amazing still from the movie, and I thought the same about the packaging... I just don't know if I could get rid of it.

Agreed, love the package. And I didn't get to watch it with the commentary last night since I finished it at 1:00am. But I will soon!

Picked those up a while back, been trying to find a good time to sit down and watch all three back to back.

Have you seen them before? Becuase I don't think that'd be the right way to watch them the first time through; they're individual films all saying their own unique message in their own unique style and should be enjoyed seperately to be enjoyed as a collective whole later on.
