I must say when I am comparing a release I look at (in order)

Is it Blu-ray or DVD
If both formats are available I look at the Blu-ray extras
Then the DVD extras
Has a possible upgrade been mentioned
Cost difference between of both formats

I then either buy the best copy for me or hang fire. There is never a film that I have to own yesterday so I can afford to ponder.

But yeah not sure with UK ones, MoC artwork looks quite similar throughout so not sure if they have in-house designers as opposed to hiring external designers?
[/QUOTE]

They tend to use the original artwork where possible, which is why there's a lot of stylistic crossover, especially amongst the films that came out around the same time from the same country's (German silents etc). They do experiment with the form of their packaging sometimes. Their steelbooks are very popular, but I'm not a fan of that kind of thing, while their release of The Passion Of Joan Of Arc probably has the most lavish packaging I've ever seen for a single movie.

Anyway, back to Criterion, I'm going to give UMBRELLAS a spin now. I only watched it a few months back thanks to the SC release, but have been itching to return ever since. I expect there will be tears.

Just watched THE THIN RED LINE.
One of my favourite films, but first time I saw it on the Bluray (although it was the first Criterion I bought).

An emotionally draining experience!
This film is not for all obviously, but once you get there you're sucked into it..

I just hope Criterion releases The Tree of Life soon.
I have helf off buying it for so long..
I know the existing Bluray is great, but I'd prefer a Criterion one, to accompany the other Criterion Mallick films.

Thin Red Line is amazing on bluray. The source novel is a fantastic read too, although Malick really took the movie in a whole different direction.

Forgot the 50% sale was still going, got an email reminder, so I ordered

Hearts & Minds (upgrading from my DVD)
Hard Days Night
A Brief History of Time
Jules Et Jim
Scanners

Couple of blind buys in there, but all from directors whose work I like.

Why? What would a Criterion release gain?

The current Blu, as you have already acknowledged, is stunning. Seriously, just check it out yourself. The release is rather slim on extras, but what more do you want? It's a Malick film. You aren't gonna get insight from the man himself. There's not much more I need to know about the film. Although I will admit that the extras for The Thin Red Line are really insightful.

Why then Criterion released some already released Blurays in US, if there was no gain?

Anyway, i like the general treatment/presentation, the covers, the menus, and maybe some more extras.
And the fact that one more Mallick film would be added to the collection, unifying it with the others..

I pulled the trigger with birthday amazon cards. My mother and mother-in-law gave me enough to cover all but the taxes. So for $8.99 I'm happy.

Back to Criterion, my wife took me to B&N in Jacksonville today and I grabbed Red River & David Lean directs Noel Coward. We were going to grab the Jacques Demy set but the cashier showed me the set and someone had been overly enthusiastic with a box razor and sliced the edge of the case from side to side so I ordered it from Ocala B&N and picked it up on the way home along with Hollow Man Blu-Ray. I've got so much to catch up on that if a coupon comes in tomorrow, I'm going to grab a Lego Architecture set instead.

I just don't see the point in releasing the film when there's already a release that doesn't have much room for improvement.

There's a rumoured 6 hour cut, they could release that? Would also love to see the boys auditions, if they were filmed that is.

I am also pretty sure they'd have left over material and experiments with Douglas Trumbull which would be a nice supplement to see.

Malick has supposedly been working on that cut on and off. Who knows if it'll ever see the light of day. Just like that "nine hour" cut of The Thin Red Line.

I just got back from seeing the 75th anniversary showing of Gone with the Wind at Fox Theatre.

I thought that I was going to be the only person lame enough to spend a beautiful summer day like today inside a movie theater for four hours, but it turns out that this showing was completely sold out, and Fox Theatre was packed. Come to think of it, I guess that an anniversary showing of Gone with the Wind might be kinda sorta popular here in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fox Theatre treated us to old-school movie news and a cartoon before the movie started, just as was done at theaters decades ago. Live music was played for the overture and the intermission. That was a great touch.

Watching Gone with the Wind with a huge audience was so much fun. The crowd cheered at the signature cues (first camera shot of Rhett Butler, first camera shot of Mammy, Scarlett's red dress, Rhett's final line, etc.). The humorous aspects of the movie came across so well with a crowd. Finally, you could have heard a pin drop during the sequence where the camera pans out to show Scarlett walking by hundreds of wounded and dead soldiers on the street.

(I know this is not Criterion-releated, but, hey, give me a break. It does make me want a Blu-ray upgrade of That Hamilton Woman soon, though.)

I'm a big Cronenberg fan. Just saw Scanners for the first time today. Maybe it's I waited 2 years for it idk but was kind of a let down for me. The concept was really cool. The acting though is pretty poor and just seemed like there were many plot holes and cheesy parts. Videodrome is way better imo.
