I like how "...and any other program as well" was included there, aside from Eraserhead.
Is there any other director who wants to make sure the viewer is prepared to watch films other than David Lynch? Oh, why yes! Terrence Malick! Because before every movie, he wants to let the viewer know to turn the volume up louder than usual. So between the Lynch TV calibration and the Malick volume boosting, I think if you combine both you have the most fussy director on the planet! ![]() |

I always take flak for this, but Dune is my favorite David Lynch movie by far. I will also define myself even deeper in the minority by saying that the theatrically-released version of Dune (featured on the existing DVD) is the superior version.

the more I read, see, and hear about Lynch, the more I'm inclined to tell him to go shove it. does he really think that anyone who is buying Eraserhead doesn't already have their televisions calibrated at differently than the way it came out of the box?! I mean, thanks for the info pal, but the audience for your films wasn't born yesterday.
I got into a discussion w/ another forum member recently and he argued that one MUST watch a film from start to finish without any interruptions and "that is why David Lynch doesn't put chapters on his discs." well, David Lynch doesn't come over to my house to watch my son while I'm watching his movies. also, 2 bits of proof that he is full of crap: #1 - his imdb trivia page says that he refuses to record commentary tracks because he believes "that films speak for themselves." really, DL? then why was it necessary to include "10 clues to unlocking Mulholland Drive" in the DVD liner notes? #2 - about the lack of chapter stops... I can't find the article right now, but recently I read about how he'd like to work more on TV. I wonder if he has ever heard of commercials. that kinda prohibits one's ability to digest your art in one sitting w/o interruptions, no? I like his films well enough, but he's a moron and should just be quiet already. he's very annoying |

Mulholland Drive is my favorite David Lynch. It was simultaneously my favorite psychological thriller prior to seeing Ingmar Bergman's Persona as I think the narrative is excellent. It was one of the first in-depth films that I saw, somewhere around three years ago, and it opened me up to a wide range of films. While I enjoy all of his films to some degree or another, I think Twin Peaks is one of his greatest accomplishments. It plays out like a soap opera, but at the same time, it is a parody of the genre. It definitely loses itself somewhere in the middle of the second season, but it gets really Lynch-like by the ending. Also, I can't help but think that all of his works are building blocks for the other. He seems to expand on certain concepts or themes from past films with each new product. David Lynch gets a lot of hate and a lot of love, but I consider myself a big fan. Some of his works certainly can't compare to other directors from the past or the same decade, but there is no denying that he has a rather creative and bizarre mind. |

I've been having a lot of trouble lately with overthinking films.
For some reason I feel like when watching a movie, I'm spending too much time analysing it and not enough time enjoying it. When I see a shot, I can't seem to just be impressed with it's beauty, I'm always trying to work out the meaning behind it. Whilst this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's kind of unhelpful for me when trying to just enjoy watching movies. Anyone else had this issue? |

Not everyone is really in the know on that shit. (even rabid movie fans) And a lot of directors agree with him on the "no commentaries" thing, Steven Spielberg being one of the big ones. On top of that, he can't really control TV now can he? I'm pretty sure he's well aware of the fact that commercials are what provide funding to mainstream television shows. And even then theres still the option of making one for HBO or Showtime where there wouldn't be commercials interrupting the story either. The guy is just one of those people who has specific views for viewing art and films, I certainly don't think that he's an idiot for having the opinions that he does. |

![]() And as was said above, the point about chapter stops and commercials is a little unfair - that's out of Lynch's control, and he could always go premium cable (or design the show to be made up of short segments). What I think would be more horrifying from his POV would be something like how HBO shows are treated on some international broadcasters (like the UK), where adverts are inserted into a show that was not designed to be broken up. Within reason, art should be viewed as created/designed (however that may be). |

This is probably why I like Criterion so much, because the supplements can help me with the understanding afterwards. And this thread ![]() It's a similar thing in music - I don't really need to know how Bruckner is moving the key around in the first movement of his Eighth; my inner ear can deal with that for me! |
