Terry Gilliam's Brazil features the film on disc one and extras (plus an alternate version of the film) on disc two. The original DVD release was a three-disc set with the alternate version on the third disc.

Rewatching it years later, I found the movie more just...fine, an above average thriller. A collection of good scenes in an otherwise generic, uninteresting narrative that didn't provide much tension. It felt like a TV movie. I'd put it at or near the bottom of Nolan's oeuvre I'd say.

Now I'm wondering if it's worth getting the Swedish film with Stellan Skarsgard. Is it just the same exact story with slightly better execution? Does it have tension and atmosphere and a more engaging narrative and more cinematic cinematography? Is it different in any significant way from Nolan's film?

Basically, I'm asking if it's a much better movie or not.
I think it's extremely average and that the remake is more engaging, despite that one also being mediocre. So no, they're not significantly different and the original is not an improvement IMO.

Pretty certain we will have Blue is the Warmest Colour, if not December, maybe January?

Love to see some more, Lars Von trier, Lynch, and Tarkovsky.

Today is the day. I am praying for more Wong Kar-Wai.

I've been rewatching his catalogue since yesterday and I somehow love his work even more than I previously thought.

I also hope for Mulholland Drive ..Im having such a great time watching Twin Peaks, it made me hope for more Lynch. I also hope we get Thief of Bagdad and one of The Devil and Daniel Webster Fiend without a Face, Equinox or Carnival of Souls for an upgrade Im probably batting zero today but the anticipation is still fun

I'm really hoping that Safe will get a december release. I never watched it, but it sounds very interesting. The OOP DVD costs a fortune on Amazon and I would love for my first viewing experience to be in HD. Plus because it's Sony, it's certain to have one hell of a transfer, probably from a 4K source.

I found it more involving.

I think that the original Norwegian version of Insomnia works much better as a film noir, and as an examination of an antihero (Stellan Skarsgård's character). The story setting of the Norwegian film is surprisingly mundane compared to the landscapes in the remake, but this helps to put the emphasis on characters, especially in conjunction with the bright lighting.

The remake is a good film, but I think that it over-explains certain narrative details, whereas the original benefits from certain ambiguities about the lead character's background.

Agreed, we definitely need more Ozu. They did skip out on Kurosawa movies in 2013, but then we got 2 in the first few months of 2014, so maybe that will happen with Ozu next year

Let's hope.

I'm also really surprised that Criterion has not been putting out more Eclipse sets.

Same here I don't care what they release in their eclispe sets any longer, I don't need grade A remasters but most of what I've seen of the DVDs could be great on BLU IMO. I am done spending money on specific DVDs at this point. classic TV shows etc are my exception.
