Caché is a phenomenal thriller and perhaps one of the best of the entire century (thus far).
I bought Hidden (Caché) on blu last year I believe. Bought it from another member on this forum. Excellent suspense film for sure. What made it so unsettling is just how minimalistic it was. Its a different kind of thriller, and if you believe its the best of the century THUS FAR, I can respect that opinion, knowing you're ranking this as a thriller film, not just a film in general.

I just spent maybe an hour watching all the "DVD Picks" from Criterion Collection's Youtube channel. There must have been 20 or 21 videos in all. My favorites were Wim Wenders, Jack Garfein, Alec Baldwin and Bill Hader. Least favorites were definitely Alfonso Cuarón (greedy bastard!), Slavoj Žižek (watching him almost gave me a nervous breakdown) and Richard Ayoade (he didn't know what he wanted).

Criterion should get some females in that Criterion closet one of these days cause it seems like a men's only closet/club.

Non-Criterion question but anyone else here a fan of Sahara ('43)? I think it's one of the best WWII films out there. Great story, performances, Miklos Rozsa score, etc. I'd be interested in learning more about the Soviet film it's based on-The Thirteen ('37).

Hidden (Caché) is still my favorite Haneke film. I saw it at the theater upon its release on these shores several years ago. One particular scene elicited the strongest audience reaction that I have ever witnessed in a theater. Those of you who have seen the movie know exactly which scene I'm referring to.

Hanake is very deserving of being in the collection.

They should do a Haneke boxset can include both versions of Funny Games :P

Amour is devastating and I can't believe Emmanuelle Riva didn't get the oscar, her portrayal was so honest and real and very frightening.

The Seventh Continent though. My god that is a powerful and disturbing film, the last moments are horrifying and my jaw was on floor throughout the film.

Hanake's film really remind me of Lars Von Triers, same sort of emotions are on both their films.

Just saw Oasis by Lee Chang-dong. Wauw. It broke my heart! Currently only released in Korea and definitely needs to be released elsewhere!

I watched Blue for the first time a few years ago when I was a little too young to truly appreciate it. I came away thinking it was boring and plotless.

Just watched the Criterion blu-ray tonight, and it was one of the greatest explorations of grief that's ever been put to film. The ending was magical cinema.

That was going to be J-Law's year no matter. It was settled the first time people saw "Silver Linings Playbook" at TIFF that year. The momentum was such that it couldn't have been overcome, even by Riva, who clearly was incredible.

Sometimes that is just the way it is.

I appreciate award ceremonies but I find oscars so unfair and its all political - I mean how did Hugo get better cinematography than The Tree of Life? MAHHHH lol so annoying lol

I love Naomi Watts perspective on the awards, why should they be put up again each other, why can't they all be rewarded for their success and talent :P

I love Naomi, but come on, this isn't Little League.

The fact is, awards shows are what they are. People who take the results too seriously are missing the whole point: Lots of incredible babes in incredible gowns on the red carpet, and the potential to win money in a pool.

Something accessible like Hugo is almost always going to do better than something difficult like Tree of Life (though I do really like both a great deal). A performance in a film like Silver Linings Playbook, which everyone saw, is going to garner more attention than one in a film like Amour, which like 10 people saw.

I just learned to accept this a long time ago, and now I can have a good time watching the Globes or the Oscars without too much angst.

Because more of the voters believed that Hugo had better cinematography than The Tree of Life, and their opinions are just as valid as anyone else's.

Because as long as there as human beings, there will be contests that pit one person or thing against another to determine which is better. One might as well ask why there have to be Olympic Games. The older I get, the less inclined I am to play the ranking game, but even I get sucked in at times.

Even here in the bluray.com forums you'll find "What are the best/favorite xxxxx films?" threads. Put two Star Trek fans together in a room, and it won't be long before they start ranking the movies from best to worst, or rank the best episodes of each TV series, or even rank the different TV series themselves. Ditto for the James Bond movies (or the actors playing Bond) or the Marvel Comics movies, or whatever. It's the nature of the beast.

Because humans thrive in competitive environments, and the Games serve also to raise us all up when we get to see tremendous achievement.

I mean, anyone who's ever seen Missy Franklin swim, for instance, is going to feel better afterwards than before.

Primary reason: To keep NBC from going bankrupt, of course.

Secondary reason: Women's Beach Volleyball.

I watched Robert Altman's Short Cuts, for the first time a couple days ago, and fell in love with it. Paul Thomas Anderson owes a huge amount of credit to Altman, as i'm sure it was a huge influence when he was making Magnolia.
