I take it still no word on a newsletter, or a date when we will see a new variation of it?

Since i read that the MOC Fantastic Planet release is gonna be region coded I had hopes that possibly Criterion would get the rights to release the film, but I would assume that the company who released the last US DVD version still has possession. Would be a waste to not get a region A release esp if there is a new HD restored version out there.

Any thoughts?

also I can't part with my DVD edition set for Breathless because of the packaging. I am sure the BD will be packaged to the same likeness.. but I can't let it go.

They are going to try something new with the newsletter. These were simply the announcements. Anxious awaiting whatever it may be. Also, as CG has pointed out, the wording seems to suggest a promo/discount as well.

Sorry to get respond so late, wasn't on here.

They are (were in Truffaut's case) actually 2 different types of directors. Godard thought they both shared the same vision (with the French New Wave movement), but it was Godard who kept true to what that vision was. Godard didn't like the films Truffaut was beginning to make after working together on Breathless and there marked the friendship ending. Godard, who was born wealthy, got to make his films with freedom. No one could say crap to him. Truffaut really didn't have that going for him. Also they are 2 totally different people. For example, one liked Spielberg, and one can't stand his films (Guess which one that is, since I share the same view).

But me, I like Truffaut's films, but not LOVE them like Godards. The comparisons start with the friendship and end with Breathless IMO. If you want to know more about Truffaut that is a fan, you might ask someone else on here before me. Not that I hate his films or anything because I like them. It's just regarding French New Wave, Godard has taken up my time with films and books. But I like all of the Cahiers du Cinema Directors (Godard, Rivette, Rohmer, Truffaut and Chabrol.). Then all of the other French directors around that period that I love like Resnais, Varda, Malle, Melville, etc. Not all of them are NEW WAVE though.

Yeah, and I also wonder when this "New" newsletter is going to happen. They always gave it out a day or 2 before announcements. Now no telling when. They did say "Offers" so I wonder what it is. Someone asked on facebook and Criterion has yet to respond. It's been 2+ days since they said they were about to send it out. Did they forget?

For real! Maybe instead of "teasing" a new release, they will open it up to a vote? On a side note, on release day someone asked about "hausu" on the criterion facebook, which I wrote ditto to. Criterion responded with, "patience..." which Is fine. I don't mind waiting. I did, however, bring up something we've discussed a bit on here about whether it would be DVD only or get the blu treatment. Posted it while on my break at work and by the time my shift was over, the topic had been deleted. Curious as to if some mad debates broke out. Heh.

prob was debates, but usually Criterion doesn't pay attention to those, unless they just started deleting posts. I don't know. I can see why there is question about Hausu on dvd only. MoC had dvd only and having Janus behind it seems now it doesn't always mean there will be a blu-ray (Dillinger is Dead is Janus, new HD print, no blu). Though I believe Hausu has more fans behind it due to the obvious. I'm not stupid, I know U.S. has alot of fans of Japanese films.

I am wondering if a "new" newsletter has anything to do with the yet to be shown cover of Thin Red Line. Maybe a poll on different covers to see who likes which one the best. I myself would find that stupid, because I rather would never see the other covers, because if my fav lost, I would hate that winning cover.

I hope we find out about the newsletter soon though.

yeah, seeing a cover you love that ended up not getting used would be awful. case in point, amazon did that for "Night of the Creeps". Gave three options and held a vote. On one hand, the one i liked best won the vote, but was apparently for the dvd only, as the bluray has a standard, generic cover. blarg.

That being said, you make an excellent point in regards to "thin red line" not having artwork yet and a poll being exactly what happens.

It seems on the Criterion Facebook the main focus is people being upset about this and that with "The Thin Red Line". From a supposed longer, rough cut to the aspect ratio thing, which i believe was simply a typo, to not enough special features. Its funny to see a movie that seems so highly asked for/anticipated and people still be unhappy about it.

So I have a quick question about this upcoming Barns and Noble sale. Is it a half price on every Criterion or a 2 for 1 criterion, or something else entirely. And I'm assuming it is half price of the MSRP, so we are looking at around $20 dollars a title?

I ask because I have some powerful Criterion lust going on, and DD has a couple for around 22, which is about as high as I like to go for Criterions, but it is low enough for me to sate these wanton cravings.

I almost never use B&N because they are so overpriced, so I have no idea what to expect from this sale.

Thanks for any input.

Which I always found a bit hypocritical on his part when weighed against his anti-U.S./anti-consumerism ideals that have pervaded most of his films and seem to be all he is about these days.

It reminds me of the Boulder hippies who would come into my old place of employment years ago smelling like poop, sporting filthy dreads and wearing the most torn up outfits you could imagine only to leave the store with a few grand worth of diesel jeans paid for with daddy's black Amex card.

As for a comparison, I enjoy both directors for different reasons...

If its the same as last year, it's 50% off the msrp, so yeah, about $20 a title. sadly i wasn't a purveyor of this site at the time and didn't know about a lot of the coupons, but from what i hear some people were getting items as low as $13, in some cases. a definite perk this year is that B&N now have free shipping for members. last year for the winter sale i had my prime trial with amazon and right when the B&N sale was coming to an end, Amazon did a criterion sale for at least two weeks, most at about the same deals. One of my good friends is a B&N employee and is keeping an eye out for me for any official announcement dates, although she did say it has been discussed amongst employees/managers as something happening soon.

I think B&N is aware of the many additional methods that people used to obtain titles even cheaper than the advertised 50% off during the holiday sale so I would expect a more stringent approach from them this time.

Worst case scenario most of the titles will be $19.98 + tax and I'm good with that.

for real! $20 a pop is completely fine with me. I've only got a few blurays left to have em all, so i've been debating picking up some more dvds or maybe even an eclipse set or two.

I have been purposely holding off for a few months on most of the CC titles I want so I can't wait for this sale...

Yeah, I'm not about to join B&N anytime soon as a member, so with tax and/or shipping, it is pretty much a wash. Plus, if the B&N sale turns out super awesome, it's not like there aren't easily 10 other criterions I want so bad I can taste it.

So I just bit on Days of Heaven, Vivre Sa Vie, and 8 1/2. And I'm cheap enough that waiting a week for free shipping doesn't bother me. I've never found DD's shipping to be noticeably slower than Amazon's super saver, it just doesn't have a tracking number.

I always have a slow experience with DD. Ordered Fallen Angels and the General on 6/8, just recieved the shipping confirmation. So they waited 11 days for nothing, neither was back ordered per the site. Good deals though, is the trade off worth it? I'm still unsure.

The Man Who Fell to Earth on Amazon went from shipping in 11-13 days to 7-11 days. I wonder how long they will continue to get stock from Criterion?
