Don't want to presume to tell you how to pay your rent, but wouldn't it be better to, say, cut down on a few recent Blu-ray purchases and keep your TMWFTE?

But need some new stuff to open and get excited about! and hopefully TMWFTE will get re released so I can rebut in future

Hate having to sell my Criterions, was debating whether to sell AK 100 but that's too precious lol

I have no logic when it comes to Criterion lol - I feel like a drug addict!

If you LITERALLY can't pay your rent, then yes, you need to seriously reevaluate your priorities.
I know, I was there 4 years ago myself.
Rent was my breaking point...my wake up call to stop spending.
and I did it.
Never looked back.

or find a workaround for your customs and stop spending insane amounts of money per movie to order at DVDworld usa and similar expensive shops.

but im downsizing my collection as well (not only criterion) , and will probably only buy movies in sales from now on. after 2 weeks with my gf in singapore i kinda realized i dont really need that much movies, streaming with hulu plus for example is a nice solution to kill a lot of time.

given the quality problems a lot of labels recently run into , criterion as well.

i feel less and less the need to "collect" discs.

rotting discs? movies cut instead of uncut ? delys over delays? replacement discs over and over again only to get medicore transfers.. prices ofter are increasing now instead of decreasing..

You have some good points - and agree the cost shouldn't have these issues, but I guess some issues don't show up till years after :/ have been a tad disappointed with some of the packaging releases (booklets etc) - amazing films have been released with great features but the complete package has been a tad disappointing :/

According to the reviews and some other photos all these recent releases have now leaflets instead of booklets:

Macbeth, The Innocents, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, My Darling Clementine, The Vanishing, La Dolce Vita.

Seems like a trend

Does anybody know if the ones that are upgrades used to have a proper booklet on the dvd release?

As I've said before, my purchasing of the entire Criterion Collection over the past couple of years was both a positive and a negative thing. On the positive side, I was allowed to see a lot of films that I would typically not be able to watch elsewhere. On the negative side, however, it cost me a lot of money (despite me purchasing them all at a discount) and I realized that not many of them have high replay value for me. In fact, I think some of them genuinely suck.

I stopped blind buying for the most part this past May and I do not regret it. I now find many alternatives to seeing the films ahead of time now, whether it be Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, or another source. I typically only blind buy if the film sounds compelling and / or I do not have any other options to seeing the film. I did not even bother to pre-order the upcoming Les Blank set as I am not a big fan of documentaries nor do I have any desire for seeing it once, let alone twice.

Not sure but I've emailed Criterion to find out why they have changed it - its so disappointing, I look forward to opening the case to a nice thick booklet to go through to get me in mood for film... now its awkwardly unfolding a bit of paper :/

-

I usually rewatch all my films many times so for me buying is best option

I suspect its most likely cost-efficient, so in order to go back to the separate BD/DVD releases, the company decided to compromise on paper costs and utilize that more efficiently. It's totally just a theory of mine though so don't take it seriously.

I'd love to know which ones you think do? That is pretty amazing you were able to buy the entire collection in blu-ray AND dvd!

Actually, I have no problem with that. I don't think I ever once actually taken a booklet out and read it from start to finish (especially some of those releases with the 30 or 40 page booklets). I have an OCD thing anyway and can't stand when my fingerprints appear on booklets with a black or dark ink background on the front/back covers. So one of these days I would like to read some of these essays and interviews but just haven't gotten around to it yet (need to get over the OCD thing or maybe just put on some nitrile gloves when handling booklets).

No, I'm sure that it's a cost thing and that their profit margin on DVD releases is a lot smaller than their profit margin on Blu Ray. They had to cut costs somewhere. Too bad, though. Criterion releases just became a little less "special."

Ahhhhhh Akahige. I'll be curious to read what you think of this movie. I think it is one of his best stories and have mentioned it several times. It would seem as if no one has watched it as there has been no response, good or bad. Leave your katana at home for this one.
