Warner Bros.? Yes!
Would love to see something like a Busby Berkeley collection like 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Footlight Parade. But I feel as if that would be something Warner Archive would put out rather than Criterion.
If criterion will release more Malick films, there is a good possibility of the longer take of The Tree of Life. The cinematographer of the movie, Lubezki, has mentioned his desire to see the longer cut on blu-ray.
I don't have a screener, but since there is interest in a review, I will purchase the disc on my own. I would like to see the exclusive interview as well.
Speaking of exclusive content, there are plenty of exclusive bonus features on the Criterion release, but plenty of the old content is missing. If you love the film, I encourage you to pick up the Black LE DVD edition from Kino Lorber. It has fantastic bonus features.
[Show spoiler]I also have the Australian release (should we post a review) which has different bonus features, and the French release from Pathe, but the bonus features on it are not subtitled in English so it isn't good for this site.
I am really unsure about how I feel about The Vanishing.
I rewatched the film tonight in order to see if I liked it more on a second viewing so that I could justify a Blu-ray purchase of it and I really do not know. On my first viewing, my expectations were through the roof, but I think I have a better grasp of the film on this watch and I was able to appreciate some things more.
I think the film is incredibly haunting in its exploration of
[Show spoiler]the dreams of the golden eggs. I actually felt paranoid when they were discussing it.
On the other hand, though, I was really devoid of any emotions as the film continued to linger on
[Show spoiler]the sociopathic nature of Raymond. I had almost the exact reaction to that aspect of the film on this watch as I did the other watch. It truly did nothing for me, nor did the way that the ending played out. I like the idea of Rex risking his life to more or less be with Saskia, but the buried alive scene...meh...
Does anyone else care to share their thoughts on this film?
I'm going to be giving it a rewatch later on this week and I'll get back to you!
What intrigues me more than anything is the mention of the possibility of pre-code Warner Bros. in the Collection.
Public Enemy, Little Caesar, and The Jazz Singer have already received impressive Blu-ray releases straight from Warner, so what else have we got...?
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932)
Blonde Crazy (1931)
Baby Face (1933)
Night Nurse (1931)
Illicit (1931)
Three on a Match (1932)
The Doorway to Hell (1930)
Footlight Parade (1933)
...and a few others
Freaks seems like it would be an excellent fit in the collection.
I am trying to get over having to buy Criterion versions of everything if there are great local releases at a fraction of the cost. (Hard to do, but I'm working on it!)
I managed to get the Aus Blu of it for $6.80 last Umbrella sale - prices like that help you get over having to have everything Criterion!
Got to see Red Beard in a theatre last night and was blown away (it was my first time seeing it)
I think it might be my favorite Mifune performance in a Kurosawa film, out of the 11 of their collaborations that I've seen. That, of course, made it a bit bittersweet knowing it was their last film together.
Even though it was a more of a passive role for Mifune, it was nice to see him still
[Show spoiler]beat up a whole bunch of people
.
Definitely jumps near the top of my upgrade wishlist, although looking at the dvd specs makes me hope they find some additional special features for the blu release.
On a side note:
I would love a re-release of Last Emperor in the original aspect ratio, exactly like the Italian 3d Bluray, but in 2d (and the brightness toned down of course)

They will this month...
With PlayTime, whose 4K restoration by Les Films de Mon Oncle is very different than the previous one that was already in Blu-ray, before it went OOP.
Wow the 15th snuck up on me this month, kinda forgot about it after the flash sale excitement. Fingers crossed for more David Lynch, Fellini, and Pasolini!
Just watched My Darling Clementine (which I'd blind-bought) for the first time -- for less than 100 minutes I liked all the directions it went in. Elements of both the classical western as well as inversions of that same trope, all with the gorgeous backgrounds of Monument Valley.
