+1

I read a lot of that thread and found a lot of helpful information there, but the problem is that it got merged with every imaginable disc problem from any company now, so it is not that helpful now if you just want to know what is the current state of the criterion replacements.

I admit I stopped reading it because it got to the point where information began to contradict, and others were claiming Pro-B should have been representative for the board and contact Criterion, and all his reviews are suspect because of his comments about how discolouration isn't the only means of determining a faulty disc. So, a lot of what would have been useful information was missed because of all the other information. I asked why one poster was claiming the 10-minute skip in Howards End was not related to the bronzing issue, and where he got that information, and was just told it was the bronzing issue. A lot of the discussion seemed to be more arguing amongst members, and trying to filter for useful information was more hassle than it was worth.

So, for someone who loves Playtime, is it safe to assume I'll enjoy the other films too? Thanks for any feedback.
If you enjoy Playtime I'm pretty sure you'll like the other Hulot films. Jour de Fete is excellent; Parade is ok.

Thanks! I'm still going to try to see one or two more before the sale, but that's helpful.

I have a great book on him-Jacques Tati by David Bellos that I would highly recommend.
Also to note that the Hulot character has a brief (very!) cameo in Truffaut's Bed and Board.

This is something I posted earlier that fleshes out my feelings on Tati's Hulot films.

The problems with the other thread really just come down to one thing: the insistence on the part of the Powers That Be that there be a single thread that covers all bad discs, no matter what the suspected cause, and no matter what label they're from. That has caused a deluge of information and reports that get in the way of someone finding specific information because it's hidden within a mass of irrelevant (to them) data.

Even worse, is that it's lumped together separate problems and makes the bronzing/oxidation issue seem far more extensive than it is.

LM Kit Carson, the writer for Paris, Texas died this week. He was also the father of the young actor in the film, Hunter Carson (who's mom is Karen Black). Don't know if this has been mentioned in the thread, I saw it on Indiewire. Sad.

I had a great time seeing Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window on the big screen at a local theater tonight.

The small details of the events in the opposite apartments really come to life when Rear Window is viewed on a big screen. The colors, particularly when "Miss Lonelyhearts" is applying her makeup during one scene, are stunning. "Miss Torso" is...well...Miss Torso is just great.

Of course, the first shot of Grace Kelly, which is, in my opinion, the greatest character introduction scene in cinema history, comes across wonderfully in a theater.

I'm really looking forward to returning to this theater next Wednesday for Hitchcock's Psycho.

Haven't checked this thread in a few weeks. I sent back my copy of "M" about two weeks ago cause of the bronzing. Haven't received replacement. Anyone get theirs?

It has been out on Blu-ray in France since last November. It is probably one of the top 3 French restorations from 2013. The release isn't English-friendly, otherwise we would have posted a review by now.

You don't need to worry about it when it transition to Blu-ray -- it is a wonderful organic presentation. It will look just as impressive here.

I think Playtime is a safe enough taster. It's Tati at his most Tati-esque, if you can tune in with that then you should be fine with the pieces that surround it.

Is this the poster art for the new tour? I like the design. Ideally any poster of this film should give credit to Georges Delerue and Giovanni Fusco for the beautiful (and haunting) score.

For those in the area, Jean-Luc Godard's new film, Goodbye to Language, opens next week in New York City.

Also, The Complete Jacques Tati and The Vanishing are now listed as in-stock on Criterion's website for those who desire to order them.
