"In house writers"? I don't think people realize how small Criterion is, they have less than 30 employees, some of that number may include their interns. Having in house writers is completely impractical.

Also some people just can't afford DVDs, and that's totally valid. Not to mention the universities and libraries that have a hefty supply of Criterion's on hand either can't aford a blu-ray library or the means to support the format. I get that's it's super easy to hate on DVD, but there are completely understandable reasons to not have blu.

Criterion is always going to be limited to the resources they have, and I think they are doing well with what they are working with considering the resources they have.

Thank you for the recommendation. I will pick up a copy.

I did look up Westchester Films and see that according to their website, they also own the rights to John Ford's Stagecoach and Ernst Lubitsch's To Be or Not to Be, as well as the five titles in Criterion's John Cassavetes Box Set. Barnes & Noble, here I come ...

Being John Malkovich is a great film and one of my favorites of the 90s. I'd definitely recommend it!

I love BJM, I love the theme of puppets and control in it, and John Cusack is unrecognisable, as is Cameron Diaz. Its quite a sad film, bur very quirky .

I can't see who it can be hated :P I love the Criterion artwork for it too

I'd HIGHLY recommend Diabolique and Purple Noon. I'd do the same for For All Mankind too, as it's a wonderful film, it just depends on whether you think buying a documentary is worth it. I personally think it is, but not everyone agrees. I'd skip Throne of Blood.

Uhhh YES? Isn't this common sense haha.

Also all films should include a FULL poster of the artwork, should be minimum size of A0 and should come framed, included in the cost of the film. (on serious note would love to see poster included in release like Che)

I saw A Brief History of Time several weeks ago (Library copy) and enjoyed it a lot. It seems to be a good primer for the book by the same name.

Bu the still pissed off they are releasing these 'half assed' packages.
So you are happy to pay for a booklet that has an essay you may have already read ?

As for an "in-house" writer, do you want film or specialised authors, like Adam said, you want a good researched piece and that takes time which equals money.

Why is everybody getting so upset over the pamphlets and whatnot?

Just give me the movie in an HD quality and you've got a happy customer over here.
