And, in case folks forgot, The Big City also has The Coward, another film, as a bonus feature.
I prefer The Big City to both Charulata and The Music Room. The latter was very underwhelming for me.

Just thinking...

What are some of the best films in collection from female directors?

All I hear about is male directors, I know we have Lynne Ramsay's first film, Lena Dunham (debatable for some!), Jane Campion and Agnes Varda (who's boxset needs upgrading :P).

I'm probably just forgetting the obvious ones, but I am struggling to think of any - there are so many male directors lol!

I can name load of incredible female directors but don't think they are in collection at all.

Chantal Akerman in the Seventies

Honestly you are right, I am having trouble coming up with some myself, you pretty much said all of them.

The Music Room was my first Ray, and it was what caused me to take a greater interest in his films. If you want to stretch it, people who watch Downton Abbey might want to watch The Music Room, as they both share a similar theme of trying to maintain the status quo of the aristocracy, in the face of modernism. Very basic analysis, but if people are interested in that theme, Howards End, Tokyo Story, The Leopard, and Black Narcissus would also pair well.

Also, for a film called The Music Room, the most important part of the film is definitely the music.

But yeah It kinda bugs me that there are floods of male directors out there, and so little female directors despite some of them being really incredible and talented, they seem to not get mentioned as much!

I hope we see more from Ramsay, she's had a rough time lately and I really want to see her sci fi take on Moby Dick. Wish she did The Lovely Bones instead of giving to Peter Jackson. Would love Morvern Callar in collection... even if they just released her short 'Swimmer'.

Brilliant thanks! Not heard of some of these, I am getting The Night Porter soon though

I do wonder why male directors do get more attention?

Just out of the blue, but in addition to my other Criterion wishlists I would wish for Amadeus (theatrical cut), beautifully restored in 4k with all grain intact.

anyone?

mostly just playing devil's advocate, but who? I have a very high opinion of the one Varda film I saw - Cleo From 5 to 7 and a rather low opinion of Fish Tank. yes, the female directors don't get spoken about all that much. but who or what films are essential?

oh, and I've seen Monsoon Wedding which, to me, is a bit of an odd film, albeit moderately entertaining.

Wow, you're down in the state of Missouri, eh?

I envy the southern hospitality you guys have got going down there.

That Barnes store sounds like a dream to me.

There are ways in which you can override the coupon not going through, though; And, at least in my store, I know we try to do the best we can to let the consumer use their coupons ('cause that's what they're there for). Standard practices should be nation-wide, so I'm not sure why you've been having a not so great experience in using coupons.
I feel everything is YMMV and that it depends on each store and their store policies and code of ethics and just overall attitude starting from the manager or top down. I think its all a matter of luck if one is able to successfully use valid coupons during sales such as the Criterion 50% off sale that happens twice a year.

I'm wondering what you think of hariseldon's post that was directed towards you?

I just feel everything is totally arbitrary.

Great choice. I would also reccommend the Larisa Shepitko eclipse set, two great films for $15 right now at BN.

Probably cause it would take extreme affirmative action on Criterion's part to get the numbers comparable, there are barely any in the industry. They already released the extremely questionable "Tiny Furniture."

I'll second this, though the separately available Jeanne Dielman is her masterpiece. I long for the day that they decide to upgrade that.

Claire Denis is in the collection too, and it'd be great to see more of her work on Blu-ray. AE did a box-set recently, but frustratingly it was DVD only.

I'm surprised that you could use a coupon more than once. I would expect that the coupon code would immediately become invalidated (for each given membership) once it's used.

As Kurosawa once said, "Not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon."

Bastards is IFC, isn't it? Why doesn't Criterion release that? White Material could possibly be one of her weakest films. 35 Shots of Rum is my personal favorite of the ones I've seen.

Here's my response to that:

I've only been working at B&N for two months, and I haven't seen the $8 off of $40 coupon before, so I can't give you an exact answer for that.

For coupons in general, though, as long as what you're purchasing doesn't go against the restrictions, you should be able to use the coupon. I have been able to use more than one coupon per transaction before, but I had help from the head cashier because I couldn't do it myself (in which he did something that I hadn't seen before and I still don't know what he did). So, it is possible as long as the restrictions are met. And speaking just for my store, if a customer puts up a fuss, we'll most likely give them what they want (perhaps about 90% of the time).

We don't get too much info for coupons (we don't even get a notice until a customer comes up and tries to use one), so I don't know if its nation-wide or local; I would think it would be for all stores, but apparently not (if going by people's coupon stories).
