In the old Star Trek shows, the color red signifies that a character is expendable.

In Don't Look Now, the color red signifies...well, you'll see!

Whilst I know what you mean, I rented the first disk of TOS season 1 recently and found it a surprisingly intense experience. The show does have a strong moral centre, and though attitudes are obviously dated, it is not as sexist as legend has it. (I think Zap Brannigan has got a lot to answer for here!).

Secret Sunshine is probably my favorite Lee Chang-dong, as well as one of my top 10 Criterion blus.

Oasis is a super close 2nd, then Peppermint Candy, then Poetry.

I still need to see Green Fish.

Can someone please poke Chang-dong and remind him it's time to make another film?

Hey guys,

Here's the review for Time Bandits. I wanted to mention that I don't have the final packaging yet, but as usual when the disc arrives I will include photos in the review and will post them here for you to see. (I also will post a few in the official thread on the forum).

Have a wonderful week everyone

Pro-B

p.s. You are welcome Alex DeLarge and lordmorpheus72. See you on the forum
Wow... December 9th can't get here quick enough. I've got a 20% coupon burning a hole in my pocket for the 50% off sale. The disc looks amazing, and what a great review! Thanks for all the work on the reviews... gotta be a hard job.

Oh, please. It deserves its reputation just for the "women cannot be starship captains" alone.

(Yes, I know. It was a product of its time, but still...it was remarkably forward-thinking in so many other respects, it really missed the mark on this one.)

You may be right - I've only seen disk 1 so far and it is far too many years since I saw the rest! Is that an actual quote?

(And although Uhuru might have been just a telephone operator, that role apparently was pretty revolutionary for its time, so it did have some exceptions).

It's the issue that generates the plot of the last episode of the series, "Turnabout Intruder".

Yeah...and no.... not comparing both... but maybe I was...or maybe I was pulling your leg...or maybe I was tired and half awake when I wrote that...yes, that's what it was.

What do you consider Lee Chang-dong's strongest film? I admit I haven't watched any other film of his yet as far as I know.

Oasis is dead last in my opinion. So is peppermint candy. Poetry can't be included.

Great Owl:

I hope you received your 30% coupon today as well.

I am going to use it on the Tati box set!

I read this post like 10 times but it still isn't making sense.

You've only seen Secret Sunshine, but Oasis and Peppermint Candy are both dead last, and
Poetry can't be ranked at all?

Huh?

Heh, I was puzzled at first, but I think he means any other film other than those I mentioned.

As to your question, I would rank them like this:

Oasis
Poetry
Peppermint Candy
Green Fish
Secret Sunshine

I felt the latter lacked the poetry (no pun intended) of some of his other works.

That 20% coupon may be burning for a while -- the BN 50% sale ends 12/1 so neither this nor Tootsie should be eligible unless there is some extra deal upcoming like last year which hasn't been announced yet

If you can wait a week, there should be a 40% sale the week before Christmas -- maybe even a 25% coupon
That's right, I confused the end date for the 50% deal. Thanks for bringing me to my senses. And I did get another BN email about other sales, maybe that is what it si about. And it had a 30% coupon in it as well.

Either way... still a deal for that movie!

It's a bit off-topic, but we've discussed Howard Hawks films, and which ones we'd like to see come out from Criterion. Well, one of them is now off the table, as the TCM Vault Collection has just released Only Angels Have Wings.

I'm keen to add some more eclipse sets to my collection (I currently only have Shochiku horror and Louise Malle) but as I try to be selective about DVD purchases, I was wondering if I could get some feedback about which you guys think are essential Eclipse releases? By that, I mean sets with genuinely great films that you think easily deserve to be in the criterion blu-ray collection.

At the moment I'm eyeing Early Bergman, Late Ray, The Actuality Dramas of Allan King and The Nikkatsu Noir set. Larisa Shapitko looks like a good one too. Ideally I only want to grab one or two. What are your top picks?

I would love some input from you too, Pro-B.

The First Films of Akira Kurosawa Eclipse set and the Postwar Kurosawa Eclipse set are both spot-on!

I really ought to buy the Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set this month.
