Cannot for the life of me decide whether to use the 30% off coupon on the Demy box-set or the BBS set.

If anyone has the time to look through my collection (even just the Criterion section) and possibly recommend which one would be the best to blind-buy it would be very much appreciated.

Is it worth buying on BD despite the framing problem on Blue? I thought there was something up with White as well.

Hobson's Choice would have been way funnier and more appropriate, as it means having a free choice where there's only one option (take it or leave it, which does work in your suggestion of buying all Criterions on the list), and it's a title in the Criterion Collection.

It also doesn't involve making light of
[Show spoiler]a woman choosing which of her children to die while entering a concentration camp run by Nazis
. Sorry, but I'm not into these kinds of jokes, and rather than just telling people to lighten up, maybe you should try to understand why people might find those kind of "jokes" offensive.

I'm trying to decide on what to go for with my 30% off code. I'm looking for something a bit more on the mainstream side, and am generally not a huge fan of the Italian or French directors in the collection (I prefer Bergman, Kubrick, and Kieslowski over Fellini, Kurosawa, and Truffaut, if that gives you any idea of my tastes)

That said, I think I've got it narrowed down to the following:

Ice Storm
The Killing
Being John Malkovich
Paths of Glory
Broadcast News
Battle of Algiers
Double Life of Veronique (didn't enjoy this one too much first time out but I watched it distracted which is always a mistake)

I'm also considering these as it seems like they belong in my collection regardless:
8 1/2
La Dolce Vita
400 Blows
Yojimo/Sanjuro

Thoughts, and suggestions for something completely different?
Bolded are two of my favourites, the former for all the supplements in it, the latter because the films are fantastic. A Hard Day's Night would pair well with your BBS set.

BBS. I'm biased though. I just ordered Demy myself, and have only seen Young Girls, which is a musical. BBS has some of the essential films of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Mind you, A Safe Place absolutely sucks, but the other films in the set more than make up for it. I just went through the entire set, including supplements about a week ago, and it really is worth the cash.

White was corrected, it should say on the disc 'second pressing'.

Actually A LOT pf people use it as a joke, and its even used in comedies on TV.

I don't know Hobsons choice hence I didn't use it. I used Sophies choice as we all come across as obsessive and in love with our collection/films, and seeing how some people react and get upset when they are damaged or if they are spoilt for choice made me think how smilier it was in terms of emotion and themes.

I wasn't calling 'Sophies choice' funny or laughable, only the way we react to our films as though the are like family or a lover.

If they don't like it, then PM me and explain and ill happily apologise as it was not intended as offence - but posting it publicly causes more posts on the subject and people getting annoyed. So yeah, if you have an issue i'd rather you PM me.

I'm pretty well stocked up on the Criterion front right about now.
I wish that Criterion would hurry up and release the 1980 John Cassavetes film, Gloria, because I want to revisit it and relive some childhood memories of seeing the film in HBO.
Speaking of which, I mighta oughta get around to watching the Five Films set now.
I don't care for Gloria, but Love Streams is excellent, especially on Criterion. I watched the French dvd years ago with hard subs and it was OK I suppose, but not being able to remove the subs was annoying.

Anyway, after rewatching Love Streams just recently I came to the conclusion that it's one of J.C's very best films. It really is the perfect swansong(Big Trouble doesn't count!)

If I may ask malakaheso, are you by any chance Greek?

It's a great crime that Theo Angelopoulos is not yet in the Criterion Collection! Wouldn't mind some Koundouros or Nikolaidis either!

I saw my first Angelopoulos just 3-4 days ago. Landscape in the mist.
it was quite good, but I have to re-watch it to be able to appreciate it fully.
Actually it's a crime that there aren't any Greek Blurays but there are Japanese Blurays of 4 Angelopoulos films.
Anyway.
yes, these films could be released by Criterion!

Does anyone want to attempt to sell me/dissuade me on Berlin Alexanderplatz? I usually prefer using a 30% off coupon on something larger like this, but I'm on the fence.

I might just go small and pick up the last Kurosawa I don't own.
